Thought Big Joe was supposed to be an ace recruiter?

Pretty big WHIFF on the D-Line recruiting at a position of need this year.

Guys like Armstead/Buckner were big keys for us in recruiting.

Joe has gotten us a couple of 3 *'s, one of which is a transfer...Not what we're paying him the big bucks for. I suppose Slick W screwed him on the Florida kids a bit. Gotta hit next cycle on the D-Line though.

I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

It looked like a decent class, but we all knew that Malcolm Lamar and Jonathan King were Willie and Woodie guys.

Getting DJ Johnson is a huge win.

Where Big Joe's strengths lie is with Poly recruits. 2019 will tell us more about this, as there are studs like 5-star DT Faatui Tuitele out of St. Louis high in Hawaii.

At the same time, I don't really care if we get high 4-stars if he can coach them up. Imagine someone like Hercules Ma'atafa on our DL. His recruiting ranking didn't bother anyone while he was the best DL in the Pac-12 this season.

This is a very basic question, but one you need to ask yourself:

Do I care about recruiting rankings, or do I care about on-field production?

Joe has never recruited stars, but he has put stars into the NFL. I don't think you should be concerning yourself with his recruiting, to be completely honest. In 1 season, he turned our defensive line into one of the strongest units on the team.

I always thought Joe was way more coach than lead recruiter. He seldom got more than a mid-3 star at WSU.

The 2 DB coaches are the guys that will be counted on to bring in the studs at all positions. They do not just recruit DBs. Coaches Joe and Pepsi just need to not scare away what the rainmakers bring in.

Joe's just never been a guy who recruited highly rated players, and he's proven time and again that his 'star system' is better than 247, Rivals, ESPN and Scout. Last year he had a Florida 3* DT named Lamont McDougle committed to him at WSU -- Lamont ultimately signed with West Virginia, and was a freshman all-american this year. At WSU, he turned Xavier Cooper into a stud, and brought on 2* Destiny Vaeao (now a pro), 2* Hercules Mata'afa (soon to be pro), 2* Robert Barber (all Pac-12) and others.

At Oregon, he brought on the 2 most promising young defensive linemen in Austin Faoliu (over Oklahoma and Arizona) and Fat Mac that we've had since Armstead and Buckner, and turned Jalen Jelks to a future pro from a guy who didn't have a position.

There are few coaches I trust more than Joe Salave'a, to be honest.

Plus, I heard Willie didn't let him recruit his guys.

BTW, I wouldn't say that DL is a HUGE position of need. In fact, we're probably not going to trip Manoa because we're content where we're at unless there's a super stud out there.

I don't know Joe's total track record at WSU. I assume there were a lot of misses mixed in there. He's a great developer, no doubt. Fat Mac was all Leavitt and Taggart and was committed before Joe got hired.

On paper this year, Joe has landed two .82 low 3 stars. On paper, that's not good. But signing day hasn't come and gone yet, so who knows?

A little early to be slamming new coaches isn't it? Especially with what Willie did to the Ducks, let alone what the recent past coaching staff did....ahhh.....didn't do. Couldn't disagree more!

So you know nothing about his time at Wazzu and are just throwing crap against the wall and seeing what sticks? Look at the Wazzu DL in his years there and tell me you wouldn’t want that here at Oregon.

I've never heard.anyone claim Joe is some big time recruiter. I have heard has as good as it gets as a DL coach, which hes already proven.

Hope he gets over to Hawaii soon to recruit those future recruits. USC and clay are already hitting up all the big high schools in Hawaii this week recruiting for the future. We seem to be no where close to favorites for the 5star DT from st. louis, marcus's old HS.

No, what I'm saying is it's pretty hard to recruit at WSU. Have to assume he has some misses, or guys who got injured, or don't turn out, or whatever...like all coaches, especially at a college who has to work to find under-the-radar recruits. I wouldn't call that throwing crap at the wall or even attacking the dude. He's a great coach. One of my favorites on the staff. But if we finish with only 2 guys low-ranked, one of them JUCO, that's clearly a disappointing year. Would be under any Oregon DL coach, especially when the staff would like to add more players at the position. But, like I said, signing day hasn't come and gone yet. There could be surprises.

After witnessing some of the Belotti years, I wouldn't say Joe has missed horribly. There were several seasons where Oregon either totally whiffed, or swung for the fences, signed highly ranked prospects, and those athletes failed to qualify.

I hear you. I'm suggesting that you wait until 2 years down the line to assess how good of a class Joe signed, because in the past what we've seen from him is that he's ahead of the curve in evaluating prospects.

I would also count DJ Johnson as part of this class, for what it's worth.
