Chip Kelly - Recruiting
I'm pretty surprised he hasn't made a bigger splash in recruiting since being hired. Based on his time at Oregon you'd think it would be a pretty easy to sell kids that they can put up gaudy numbers on offense.
Did his time in the NFL tarnish his image that bad?

Yeah, but recruiting was never Chip’s thing. I think he started getting better recruits when he was winning. Win and it does a lot of the recruiting for you.

Re: Chip Kelly - Recruiting
I think alot of top recruits nowadays want the red carpet treatment, which is not what Chip is about. He'll get kids who are mostly attracted to his coaching. I also agree with the winning part. Just look at why the top CB who was basically a LSU lock flipped to the Tides today. He wanted to play for a winner and get championships.DuckMastaFunk wrote:Yeah, but recruiting was never Chip’s thing. I think he started getting better recruits when he was winning. Chip starts dropping 60 points on everyone and playing for titles he will kill recruiting.
Same with Mario C at Oregon. We want players on the fence we have to win and compete for titles. Coaching termoil, 8 won seasons, and bowl blowouts aren’t going to get us players we want.

True it's not really his bag. But being in LA has to make things exponentially easier than trying to recruit to Eugene.DuckMastaFunk wrote:Yeah, but recruiting was never Chip’s thing. I think he started getting better recruits when he was winning. Win and it does a lot of the recruiting for you.
Maybe losing Rosen is having an impact too.

HE didn’t exactly hire ace recruiters as assistants

Nope. He hired people on their coaching ability. While I generally agree with him that coaching and player development kick the crap out of recruiting stars, in a 10 person staff I think you should hire at least one rainmaker. Afterall, when you do run up against someone who is as good a coach as you, raw talent then becomes the decider.GoDuckYourself wrote:HE didn’t exactly hire ace recruiters as assistants

Re: Chip Kelly - Recruiting
UCLA finished the recruiting cycle very strong.
We all know what Chip's strategy is. He's aiming for UCLA to surprise everyone on the field next season, and the combination of success and UCLA's inherent advantages will lead to recruiting success. I don't think his NFL time has tarnished his reputation, if anything he has an extra recruiting pitch.
If I was going against Chip on the recruiting trail I'd bring up Shady McCoy's accusations, which aren't founded in reality, but do give some negative recruiting material.

Re: Chip Kelly - Recruiting
So Chip finished with 10 Four stars and 18 Three Stars. Got an elite Dual Threat QB. A really good start for him.
He kept his pattern of getting the bulk of his commits late. He also was also slow giving out offers so they could do his own evaluation to get guys that he saw as fits for his system.
USC, Oregon, Washington and UCLA were all in a tier above the rest of the conference with only Stanford coming close to breaking into that group.
(Stanford getting Bryce Love to come back is the biggest impact "recruit" in the conference for next year though.)

Re: Chip Kelly - Recruiting
He actually closed pretty well. I think he was too far removed from CFB for major recruits to just start lining up.
