When I was at UO there were plenty of opportunities to play volleyball (my favorite participant sport), although surely not at the competitive level of which he is capable. But, there are intramurals and weekend pick up games which could get rather intense.

I know that most coaches tend to not let their players do intramurals or play in rec games since there is a good chance they could get hurt, but I have seen them in the past. I was working in the rec center when I was still in school and saw numerous football players playing in the intramural basketball leagues so I think some sneak in and do them anyways.

Great article except for the one quote by Kent. He basically said: "remember, Wilson is just a freshman". Translation: if the team fails this season, he can blame it on the young players.

Or he's just trying to make sure expectations don't get too high for an 18-year-old... I don't know why we ALWAYS have to expect the worst out of Kent.

I think people are frustrated with the lack of effort from a team that has a lot of talent and the inconsistency with the teams and blame him for that. Yes we are not a traditional basketball program, but that doesn't mean we can't do better. We were never a traditional football program before but look at the success we have had with football the last 15 years or so. Kent has turned the program around from what it was before but he needs to be more consistent, not a couple down years then a good year. The perception is a new coach is needed to create consistency or get the program to the next level. It will be hard to justify a new $250 million arena with a team that is not any good yet has good players. My thoughts are to let Kent finish out his contract and if he is not able to improve the team during that time and be consistent then don't renew his contract and find somebody else.

No, his excuses are annoying. It's time for the team to step up big time this season.

No, his excuses are annoying..
how can you refute an opinion of mine.. i said people who pick apart all of kents words and use them against him are absolutely annoying... which in my opinion they are...

when kent say remember hes only a freshman... nobody has the right to just twist the meaning and use it against him.... hes only trying to protect the player for letting down fans who have unreasonable expectations...

now i do think "It's time for the team to step up big time this season." and if they don't.. kent has no excuses at all. i think not making the NIT this year is inexcusable

I played on the Karl McGowen coached Duck VB team in '68-70. We placed 9th in the National Championship Tournament. Title 9 doomed the program. McGowen in now at BYU. I believe they have won a couple of National Championships under his coaching. Those could have been Duck titles had we retained the program.

Playing both BB and VB is hard. Keith Erickson, the Bruin great, is one of the few players that was both an All American in both sports.
