Assuming he sticks with Oregon, this will be a really interesting recruit to watch develop. The staff went across the country to get him, but he’s not even a top 1000 prospect nationally or a top 100 prospect in GA. Clearly the coaches see something special in this kid that the recruiting sites don’t. If he turns into an impact player, this is the sort of find that would really give me confidence in our coaches’ ability to scout talent. Here’s to hoping...

247 has Swinson ranked in the 600s and as the 35th DE. It’s ESPN that is tanking his composite rank. ESPN doesn’t even bother, their recruiting staff is down to like one or two guys. I don’t think this kid is that raw of a project, Jalen Jelks was ranked similarly.

247 has Swinson ranked in the 600s and as the 35th DE
yeaaah, that's...still not good lol. especially with how limited are are in remaining spots.

You have to believe the coaches LOVE this kid if they're going to offer and accept. This was a Ken Wilson recruit and he's built some great D teams at Wazzu. I am with STU, the kid looked a little slow upon the hike, but comes with anger. Let's see what he does.

I'll take a underrated DE from the south, over a highly rated DL from the state of Oregon anyday.

You'd take Swinson over Marlon Tuipulotu? Or you mean Ndamakong Sou? Or Brennan Scarlett? Or Owa Odighizuwa?
Time will tell, but that doesn't seem wise.

Would you trade Fat Mac (3* kid from the south) for anyone on that list besides Suh? Gus Cumperland is having just as good a year this year, as anyone of those other guys had as a Sr. Owa sucked for 3 years at UCLA, and had an ok sr year. He was drafted based on his combine and upside. Scarlett wasn't a great player, he was a solid player but nothing special. Marlon , again give me Fat Mac if I have to choose between the 2. Although he would have been great depth.

So you wouldn't take four highly rated Oregon defensive linemen who all became NFL players but would rather go with four three star linemen as long as they're from the south, eh? The only 'highly rated defensive lineman from Oregon' who was a bust was Myles Wade. 80% become NFL players (do 80% of southern 3*s become NFL players?), and that's not even counting not-highly-rated guys like Taylor Hart, who I'd take over Cumberlander in a heartbeat.

I think you're missing the point. I fully believe if this kid played in Oregon, he would dominate to the point he would be as highly ranked as those guys. If you put Scarlett or Owa in Georgia, they wouldn't be as good and would have been 3* or fringe 4*.

Very little of a player's rankings these days is based on what they do on the field in high school. Rather, it's what they do at camps and based on their measurables. Those things don't change regardless of being in Florida or Oregon. Put FatMac in Oregon, he's still 6'0-6'1 and fluffy. Cumberlander was incredibly raw, and his 3* rating was appropriate seeing as how he's a guy who will only have an impact in really 1 year of his college career.
