Oregon continues their hot streak by picking up fast-rising DB Darren Barkins out of Mater Dei Catholic HS in Chula Vista, CA, which is the same school that produced CJ Verdell.

Ya he's been blowing up lately. I really liked his film, especially relative to his ranking:

Yeah, this is the first time I actually took the time to watch his film.....he looks a lot better than I was expecting, to be honest. I know you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, but he isn't the first guy I would pick for a team just based on his pictures. He looks more like a skinny, baby faced, high school geek than a jock. With a helmet and uniform on, he is much more athletic and plays with more toughness than expected. He kinda reminds me of Jeff Maehl back in his high school days.

Yeah, high level college football is filled with skinny guys that look just like this.



Obviously, Barkins would be towards the bottom of the heap if coaches were picking from a group of high level recruits based on how they look in t-shirts and shorts. Fortunately, Darren's performance on the field belies his debate team captain appearance.

Cliff Harris was about 155 in HS. And if Barkins has short hair, he actually looks alot like Taylor Rapp in HS. So yeah, lots of decent recruits are skinny in hs.

Taylor Rapp looked like a college safety in high, so that is a terrible comparison if you are focusing on body style. He was a verified 190 pounds and really didn't need much body work in order to see the field. Here is a picture of him in high school...



By comparison, our boy Barkins is an unverified 170 pound stick figure that is going to need a couple years of work in the weight room.



Cliff Harris looks nothing like Barkins, so that has nothing to do with entire point of my post. The point isn't that some skinny guys can find a way to have success in the game of football. The point is that Barkins, for a wide variety of reasons, doesn't look like your typical high level football recruit. That is just a fact.

This is a really dumb conversation. Who cares what his face looks like.

Gonna have to agree with this.

Barkens plays physical for his size. And it won't take him a couple years to bulk up. One off-season and he'll be physically ready for college football.
