Blazers trade

Jim Lampley
87 2nd

Sonics Trade
Cedric Maxwell

I am going all in on some guys and using up my cap space now as opposed to a total shot in the dark at Moses or Joe Barry

Accept. Not completely sure how injuries work here but I don’t expect Maxwell to maintain his level of production coming back from a ruptured achilles and Lampley is a bright young player. Goodbye Maxwell/English experiment, hello rebuild!

Injuries have no impact on future production. Its just a "thing" that prevents them from playing at that time. Injuries do not carry over to next season either

He looks set as a backup tweener 3/4

If you are truly going for a rebuild then shedding the salary is nice for the next two years but maybe could have squeezed more for Maxwell

Agreed. His contract isn't the best, but any competing team that would need a SG would take him in a heartbeat.

I traded two firsts for Dudley Bradley last year - who has similar value to Maxwell, in my opinion (especially considering contract).

In the Sonics defense though, it's hard to dump contracts these days  although Maxwell is a quality player, people be hoarding cap space

At this time of year, asking people to use up their cap space in a trade is unlikely to yield much in the way of results, true. However, that's usually the case where you have to give something up to take on the money. In this case, Blazers just get Maxwell for free lol so it's just a free agent signing without the gamble of striking out. Lukey don't need to be so stingy lol

One thing that has been interesting is, a lot of people who strike out on the big FAs have been giving out big 1 year deals to lesser players hoping to trade them for value, and it seems to rarely ever work. Wonder if people will start taking cap space into the season in the future. Almost more likely to get a good player for picks and cap relief than to get picks or players of value for a player on a 1 year overpay, since the teams most likely to want one of those guys are usually capped out.

I think as time goes on and more and more players are signed to longer deals and fewer teams have cap space available, that we will see a more well rounded market. Right now, probably 15 teams can and will offer Moses a max contract.
