1986 Lottery First Camp

Post by Cellar-door »

Time to look at the 1986 lottery and see who is rising or falling from draft position after the fairly important first camp.

#1 Drazen Petrovic
AT THE DRAFT C+ B+ C B C A
AFTER TC #1 C+ B C B+ C+ A

Saw a drop in his outside offense, but I think Grizz will trade that for a bump into good defense and respectable rebounding. Petro is looking like a complete player long term.

#2 Brad Daugherty
AT THE DRAFT B+ C- C- B- B- A
AFTER TC #1 B+ C- C- B B A

Great Camp, gains in the two most important big man categories, Daugherty looks like he's going to be a top big from the jump.

#3 Arvydas Sabonis
AT THE DRAFT C+ C C B- B- A
AFTER TC #1 C+ C C B B B

A similar camp to Daugherty, but the drop in potential for one of the older rookies might be a concern. given the lack of elite scoring like Daugherty, Sabonis could still end up more of a role player than star if this is an indication of less future growth.

#4 Len Bias
AT THE DRAFT B+ C C C+ C A
AFTER TC #1 B+ C C B- C B

A bump in defense is nice, the drop in potential on only a +1 camp raises some concerns about his ability to become an all-around star... still stayed at B+ scoring inside, so he'll have a rotation role for many years

#5 Dennis Rodman
AT THE DRAFT C D+ C- B B A
AFTER TC #1 C D+ D+ A- B A

Big jump in defense paired with a drop in Handling, based on past articles the offense vs. rebounding defense gap is unlikely to close. Rodman is going to be a specialist it looks like... question becomes, is a big who can't score worth the #5 pick, even if he becomes elite on the D end?

#6 John Salley
AT THE DRAFT B- D+ D B+ B- B
AFTER TC #1 B- D+ D+ B+ B B

Our first player not drafted with A potential, saw a small move at rebounding and handling, Bulls have to be happy with that, Salley looking like at least a pretty well rounded big, probably not an offensive focus yet, but he can hit the boards and defend with more potential on the other end than Rodman.

#7 Roy Tarpley

AT THE DRAFT B C- D B C+ B
AFTER TC #1 B+ C- D+ B B- B

A strong camp, moving from B to B+ INS shows the potential for a go to scorer on the block, especially with a bump in HND giving the potential of reducing TOV, and a move towards more respectable rebounding for his size. Exactly what you want to see if you are the Raptors

#8 Johnny Dawkins
AT THE DRAFT C+ C B C+ D A
AFTER TC #1 C+ C B+ B- D A

The first PG off the board, Dawkins kept his high potential, and added to two of the 3 key PG categories. The lack of scoring movement might mean he's going to be more of a Mo Cheeks than a scorer, but there is still the potential for growth down the road. One wonders if BOS would have gotten more out of staying at 3 though.

#9 Jeff Hornacek
AT THE DRAFT C+ C+ C C+ C- A
AFTER TC #1 C+ C+ C B- C- A

This pick drew some heat in draft grades, as some felt it was too high for a raw all-arounder with no clear single skill, after one TC... not much has changed, still a high potential raw player, the bump in defense is small and still leaves him without any clear above average skill.

#10 Brad Sellers
AT THE DRAFT B+ C- C- B+ B+ C
AFTER TC #1 B+ C- C B+ B C

In many ways the opposite type of pick from Hornacek, Sellers was the ready now pick with low upside. Have to think Grizzlies would happily give back the HND boost here to prevent the slide in the more important rebounding category. Still, for C potential not moving much is all you really expect.

#11 Kevin Duckworth
AT THE DRAFT C+ C- C- B- C+ A
AFTER TC #1 B- C- C- B+ B- B

Huge camp for Duckworth, moving up 1 in 2 key categories, and getting a +2 in the third. Suddenly he goes from a maybe player to a clear rotation guy day 1, getting the early scoring bump looks key, as it opens up the possibility of a 2 way impact.

#12 William Bedford
AT THE DRAFT C+ C- C- C+ C+ A
AFTER TC #1 B- C- C B B+ A

The big man version of Hornacek saw a truly explosive TC, plus 1 in 2 categories, and a plus 2 and plus 3 in the key big man categories. A massive steal in the late lottery for the commish.

#13 Chuck Person
AT THE DRAFT B- B- C- C+ C- B
AFTER TC #1 C+ B C C+ C- B

The Hawks' second pick, they went with the safer Person. While he is less well rounded offensively after camp, you have to think he was drafted on the promise of his outside shot, so the swap is probably welcome here, and a small HND boost is always nice. Not much of a defender or rebounder yet though, but if he can shoot the 3, he'll be a rotation player in the league for years.

Recap- An interesting year, there was an amazing breakout player late in the lottery, but also... no clear bust candidates yet either. Nobody really decreased, nobody who had only small movement had a big drop in potential. Looks like next year might be the make or break for some of these players.
