We won't make it to the Big Dance unless our bigs step it up (Crittle and Dunigan).

It's possible, I'm mostly concerned with Garrett Sims and TP's defense more than anything.

Looking forward to Jamil Wilson :)

Wow! I don't know what to say after reading that article.
This is TP's team? He is the starting point guard for this season?
He was 1-5 with 4 turnovers against CONCORDIA!!!!!

The fact is, the TP at PG experiment should have ended two years ago. HE IS NOT A PG, HE IS A SHOOTER! He doesn't see the floor well, he is unable to penetrate and get good shots; he lacks quickness (for his size), he has average handles, and is a below-average passer for a PG at best. If EK is going to insist on playing Porter at the PG position for the entire season, this team will be lucky to win 6 Pac-10 games. Porter is an amazing spot up shooter, and he deserves to play SG where he will excell in this offense.

Unfrickinbelievable. Why did EK go and get Armstead then if he is just going to play TP at the point? Man, I wish we still had Brown. He was fast, could see the floor better than anyone on the roster, he had excellent handles, and was an amazing passer. Yeah, he made a lot of bad decisions, but at least he had the potential to be a good Pac-10 starter. Those decisions would have gotten better with playing time. EK made a huge mistake not leaving Brown in for 35 minutes a game last season and letting him work through his problems. Our season was toast three weeks in anyways. If he would have been patient with Brown, we would have a decent starter right now at that position. Now instead, once again, we don't have a decent PG for this season. Armstead is CLEARLY not the guy, if he can't take those PG minutes from TP right now.

UGH!!!

Good points guys. I think that a lot of the time, Oregon is a better team when Porter isn't on the floor. He is too streaky from the outside, doesn't get many assists and turns the ball over too much. Anyway, Oregon needs consistent play this season out of guys like Catron and Dunigan. They need to be more physical and actually play defense.

I think the TP bashing is a little misguided. As we saw from his frosh year, when he's on the floor he can be a ridiculous threat for us. This team is not better when he is off the floor... but only when Ernie actually uses him right.

The problem with TP the last two years is Kent practically forcing TP to do EVERYTHING. He's 5'6, he can't take the ball to the hoop by himself & he can't be double teamed on the perimeter chucking up threes. But that's what we ran, that was the offense that Ernie stuck with ALL season. Screen at the top of the key, TP chuck it up. When he couldn't get open off that one weak screen he was forced to dribble around & chuck up a shot as the shot clock expired. He's not Kobe fraking Bryant, he can't go 1 on 5 all game. But Kent was to stupid to realize it.

TP was doing what he was forced to do, going with plays that were called. If Kent can pull his head out & use TP like he should be used, coming off screens without the ball so he can catch & shoot, he will be a moster out on the court. TP is just easy to pile on cuz he was the who had the ball all game so, of course, made all the mistakes. Put any other player on the team in his spot last year & they would have looked just as bad, probably worse.

I think TP is good when he doesn't have all of the pressure on him. He was really good playing behind Brooks. I would hope EK or the new assistant would use him the same way with Armstead, he would be very effective that way.

agreed. That's the biggest problem I saw in Kent's coaching. Saying TP is our stud and we're going to ride him this year. He is a very good role player to shoot open three pointers. When his role is an off ball player he is extremely effective. No question that he is a great player but I don't think he is the stud that we can ride all game. There is only so much a 5'6 player can do on the floor.

TP is clearly the best player on our team.

It is not his fault that none of the other guards can play PG.

The fact is, he is our best 2-guard, and our best PG (at least the last couple years anyway, I have not seen Armstead yet. Armstead has to be a decent PG for us to play well), and that is the problem. TP is not our problem, he is our best solution, and this is not good.

There are not many players on this team (or any team in the P10 for that matter) that can create his own shot as the shot clock is going down. TP can, but he was forced to do too much of this because others cannot, and we do not have a PG that can penetrate and dish.

Find a PG that can penetrate and dish and you would all be in love with TP again.

I'm not so sure about that, especially with someone like Wilson now on the team. Besides, what else does he do besides make the three point shot?

Duckgrad: Are you ready to annoint Wilson the best player on our team? He hasn't even played a real game yet. Do you remember TPs start --- perhaps the best in the HISTORY of the UO program.
I have not seen enough of Jamil to say otherwise. I sure hope you are right and he is our best player TODAY, but I doubt it.
What else does TP do (you asked)? When the shot clock is down to 6 seconds, as it OFTEN is, with our Ducks still passing the ball on the perimeter, who do you want to have the ball? Who else can create their own shot? Like it or not, TP is the best in this position and then Catron is the second best, then Longmire as far as I can tell. Not only did others neglect to take control in this situation last year, but I recall many OPEN shots that were passed up by the end of last yr as the shot clock was winding down.
So here's the scenario again, and it happens OFTEN: You have 6 sec on the clock and nobody has an open look, who do you want to take the ball?

TP is a great SG and deserves a starting position. It is not his fault the EK continues to play him out of position. Hopefully Armstead will step up to allow TP to move back to SG. I was alamed by EK's comments about playing Porter at the point before the start of the exhibition. However, based on the post game interviews after the second game, it sounds like Armstead will start at PG. Porter will play some minutes at PG to rest Armstead, but he will start and play most of his minutes at SG. On defense, they will switch. Armstead will d up on the SG, while Porter will typically take the PG in man to man situations.

That is good to hear.

TP is not a Pac-10 starter and Ernie hitched his horse to TP's success. TP is well suited to be a spark plug as a 6th man i.e. JR Smith is for the Nuggets. Fact of the matter is that you can go back and do an analysis of how many points he gives up defensively vs how many he scores and it correlates well to the w/l record of our team.
