A lot of dogging of Mario in this thread, which is understandable, but that's an impressive hire. He just got the Michigan OC coming off the playoffs and winning the award for best assistant coach in college football to make a lateral move to Miami. I'm sure more money was involved, but that is some serious credibility Mario just got for his program. Same hiring pattern as when he was at Oregon: wait and endure criticism while securing the best assistants and shutting everyone up. Gotta hand it to him.

I've gotta think that Harbaugh openly flirting with the NFL again has to be part of the reason why so many coaches have bailed on him this offseason. Would make sense if Gattis wanted something more secure with a big pay raise to go to Miami.

Really didn't expect them to get an OC like Gattis.

I wonder if this puts Miami into the driver’s seat for Josh Connerly. Gattis texted his players that he felt unappreciated and told them to not ever put up with that. Harbaugh claiming future fidelity after trying for every NFL job probably didn’t help matters. He tried to parlay a lucky season into a new job.

Nevertheless, a fancy move by Mario. College football is largely a game of perception and prestige - and Miami scored a coup.

Why do I think the odds of amario achieving this type of hire at Oregon were slim to none?

I still believe we upgraded.

Just can’t help but wonder if Mario will stay out of his way and let him do his thing.

Hence, the "upgrade"... I think CMC is still a ways away from allowing his assistants the freedum, and independunce, to do their jobs.

Hope, for his sake, I'm wrong.

Time will tell.

I think this narrative of Mario 'not allowing his assistants freedom' is probably overdone.

I was thinking the same thing. I doubt Mario went too far over most head coaches do: which is set the team’s identity.

As head coach Joe Moorhead ran the ball and the QB at Mississippi State with little regard for the forward pass. He didn’t need Cristobal to convince him to do that.

Actually it’s not, based on the feedback from people inside the HDC.

Looks like he'll be hiring UGA's DB coach now.

No ill will to Mario, but of the two coaches, I think Oregon got the better option. But only time will tell.

He's getting Charlie Strong as his LBs coach.
