Career Stats-By-Teams Shenanigans

Post by The Bean Regime »

No points here, just thought that this would be fun to do after updating my career totals excel file (available here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... ue&sd=true ). I’m going to look at every teams’ leaders in each of the 5 basic categories and list their total in that category followed by their career per-game numbers in brackets next to it. And then also have games played with their total games played for the team followed by seasons on the team in the brackets.. So if GOAT Scottie Pippen was the Wolve’s points leader in another life, it would look something like:

Points: Scottie Pippen (59806, 39.6), with point totals being followed by PPG in the bracket

As for goat contenders, it’ll mainly take career stats on the team into account, but also if the player is still on the team they may be considered even if the totals are low compared to their peers. Only requirements are the player plays at least half-as-many seasons played for the team as the team’s leader, and that the player has signed with the team post-rookie-contract (resigned or signing), as that’s the most-likely point where the team loses the player if they're a potential team-goat.

And here it all is:

Hey hey hey, I won't allow Bridgeman slander. He peaked very similar to Drexler but a bit better since his FG% was considerably better and TOs much lower.

I'm probably one of the teams with the highest average-length tenure for players (maybe I'll look at that). Just that I picked last in the creation draft and then let the scrub go in the following FA (Birdsong, 17.9 PPG and B- defense as #1. To his credit, he immediately improved to like 22 and B+ D next season but whatever :P ), and while my later picks tend to be decent, my top-end picks weren't very good (Tripucka, Pippen, Marciulionis).

And then finally Charles Smith would have easily been goated (thanks Bucks), but I traded him.

Ok, so I did look at it. I averaged the # of seasons a player plays for a team (more than or equal to 2 seasons. Didn't want to count 1-season rentals) as well as the total number of players that were in the data set for each team. Then I added the number of 1-year rentals for each team just for fun, though sophomores naturally are gonna be on the list, like Shaq for the Suns. Here it is (don't need to download it): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... ue&sd=true

The rankings are:
Descending for season average, with a higher rank showing more stability overall.
Ascending for player count, with a higher rank showing more stability in volume.
Ascending for 1-year rental count, with a higher rank showing stability in volume again. The latter 2 should mirror each other I expect.

So reading the data for a few teams:

Clippers are nuts. #1 in season average and #1 in 1-year rentals. If they acquire someone, they'll be stuck in Clipper purgatory for several seasons.

Bulls are similar, with a high season average (#6), a low player count (#5), and a below-average # of 1-year rentals (#8). A long-term, plentiful core with small changes annually.

I show a little different results. I'm #4 in season average, but #1 with the least amount of players in the count and a moderately-high number of 1-year rentals (#23). So I seem to be more open to trying new players, but if a player makes it past season 1 they're stuck with me.

Grizzlies have a very low season average (#28) but a very low player count (#1) and the highest 1-year rental rate (#29). They have a small core that hasn't been around too long while the surrounding pieces are constantly adjusted.

Nets have shown success with a very-low season average (#25), a below-average player count (#10), and a high # of 1-years (#25). Similar to the Grizzlies, but a bit more likely to hold on to a player past 1-season.

Overall, the teams inclined to hold onto players the longest are the Clippers, Knicks, Timberwolves, Bulls, Jazz, and Spurs in no particular order.

Meanwhile, the teams least-inclined to do so are the Grizzlies, Suns, Trailblazers, Nets, and Supersonics, again unordered.

Right in the middle are probably the 76ers, Mavericks, Pistons, and Pacers.

But for the most part, the numbers aren't THAT different from one another.
