If you are out of scholarships, can you bring a guy in on just NIL and not a scholarship??? Would that work with a transfer and a high school player? Are there limits on total team size?

85 scholarship players, 30 walk-ons, total roster limit of 115.

I think there is a very minor practical difference as it relates to any tangible benefits from the school being on scholarship vs not. As I recall when I was in school walk-ons had to pay for training table meals but I think that got changed during the Chip years nationwide.

I think it was buckmarkduck who said that RB Jay Harris won't be on scholarship but straight NIL package.

Scholarship limits went to 85 in the early 90s. Before that rich schools (like UW) would sign 100+ kids, with many ending up watching games from the sidelines who would have played for poor schools (like UO). To quote a former OSU QB, things have turned around 360.

I'd say that most of Oregon's specialists are on NIL packages as well as a couple of their latest transfer additions.

Only real difference from the student athlete side is NIL is taxable. Need to cover your expenses plus Uncle Sam's share.

I always thought of walk ons as being from families with money; why walk on with Oregon if you could get a full ride at Portland State? But I suppose a number of these kids qualify for academic or need based scholarships, supplemented by NIL dough. There are probably rules to prevent abuses, but how aggressive is the NCAA on enforcing borderline rules in these wild west times?

When I worked at the UO, I knew a walk on who had a full academic ride. But if I recall he had to wait a year to walk on because of it. That probably has changed though, that was 20 years ago.
