Mark Wiepert - Wilsonville '25 - ATH (QB-S)

So Wiepert from Wilsonville just picked up an offer from Oregon, I'm thinking its likely a PWO with perhaps some NIL money to go along with it.
Obviously the big news is the 8 TDs he scored on Friday in the 5A title game and while it was just his only year at QB if I had to guess which side of the ball he'd end up on it would be as a Safety or WR as he's got that Jeff Maehl look to his game that says "Not some freak athlete, just a really good football player." I remember watching him as a Sophomore and he could hit on the back end of the Defense.

I could be mistaken, but I don't think the PWO concept will exist any longer after this season. The 105 roster limit, with all being entitled to a scholarship will begin next year. I think historically this would be a PWO, but I think it's a legit scholly at this point.

It’s a 105 player limit. Programs can choose how many scholarship they provide at or below that total number. Pretty sure the SEC has put a limit on scholarships to stay at the 85 limit.

Ha! I don't know mark, but I know his dad Bryan pretty well. His dad goes to my church, and I played basketball at his gym on his property before.
Great family! And Bryan is such a benevolent person. I didn't realize Mark was such a star in Oregon's high school ranks.

He's an Oregon State baseball commit so we'll see if he want to play football at Oregon instead and potentially join the baseball team too.

Fair enough. I guess I just expected that if they can put a guy on scholly, they might as well. Weird the SEC, of all conferences, put the limit at 85. You would think they would jump at the opportunity to increase the number of scholarship players on their roster to increase depth. I don't see anything regarding the B1G following suit to this point, so it feels like the Ducks should just give everyone on the roster a scholarship. Alas, perhaps they have reasons for not doing so.

Reminds me of of Mike Hass who had 7 TD's in a quarterfinal playoff game against #1 Central Catholic. Didn't get a single D1 offer despite massive stats and honors. Became first team All-American after walking on at Oregon State. Then Jordan Poyer, one of the best High School careers in Oregon history. Had to walk-on at OSU, All-American and playing in his 11th season in the NFL.
I always felt you should go after the best player in the state with your last scholarship in a class, even if they aren't a high star recruit. Particularly, in the era these two were in high school when the bottom of our recruiting classes were a few 2 star long shots out of CA.

I'm 90+ percent sure Poyer was never a walk-on.
I don't hate your idea. In-state kids do add something to the team chemistry, IMO. I think the team has taken an appropriate number of fliers on in-state kids in recent years.

He was given a Preferred Walk On with a promise he would get a scholarship if they dropped below the 85 limit. This is according to the big bi-op article the Oregonian did on him his senior year. It was his only FBS offer.

Got it. I think it may be be true that he was on scholarship by the time he stepped on campus, because while I saw a similarly old article on him, I couldn't find anything ever referencing him as a walk-on.

Oregon was able to flip him as a preferred walk-on. I bet Coach Waz is ecstatic if he shows up for baseball.
