In a ruling that anyone could see coming, the U.S. judicial system, thanks this time to a judge in Alabama, has put another bullet in the dead body of the NCAA. In this case, the show-cause (effectively a ban on coaching) for former Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt has been blocked.

The NCAA can't enforce anything. I've said for years that hating on the NCAA is just the fashionable thing to do when in reality it has none of the power to cure the ills of the sport. That may be my most proven take, but it won't stop people from complaining about the NCAA anyway.

Aside from OP's opinion, thank God for the redundancy that the judicial system provides our democratic constitutional republic

It seems like someone should have to do something pretty darn egregious to have the governing body not only fire them, but also prevent them from exercising their trade anywhere else. I'm trying to think of another industry where someone who didn't commit a felony can be prevented from earning a living.

I'm much less commenting on the judicial system and more how the evolution of NCAA sports has become such that the governance is untenable, regardless of what the NCAA as a body may or may not have an interest in doing. Frankly, I have almost no opinion on whether this ruling is right or wrong. Just another bullet in the dead body.

The NCAA is and has been a disaster for some time. The NCAA has certainly over stepped in some instances and been inconsistent in others, but the recent lawsuits have left them impotent to the point that they won't step in to regulate some of the recent changes like NIL.

IMO, the NCAA as the governing body for FBS is something that needs to get sorted out or the 'wild west' $hit show will continue to ruin CFB.

The universities have been running a scam. They attempt to designate football and basketball players as student athletes, when it's plainly obvious that the institutions are financially benefiting from their labor, and should be considered employees. Which means they have to obey employment law and can't engage in anti-competitive behavior.

It's kind of ridiculous that the courts have let them get away with it for as long as they have. They still haven't been recognized as employees, and still don't have the right to unionize. Not that it is in the best interest of the players to actually form a union, the various pro sports unions have done a terrible job of representing the players (except maybe baseball) and have been in the pockets of the owners for decades.

The NCAA is just part of the scam--its only purpose is to deflect blame away from the universities blatantly illegal behavior.

Has the ncaa had teeth over the last 4-5 years? I must have missed it. Their own greed put them in this spot. If they would have just paid the athletes, namely the football teams, over the last 30 years while making billions off of them. Then they wouldn’t be in this spot.

My gut agrees but my brain says this period of unclarity was inevitable. There will have to be a new NCAA of some sort where students can't be restricted from transferring schools but can be restricted from participating in this new league, and coaches can be banned for doing things outside the rules. The existing model where student-athlete is still an existing term will continue to get in the way. But divorcing the athletic department from the school further may end up doing major damage if alumni and fans don't maintain the same connection.
