UO Sues Dakoda Fields for Missing Payment

So the other shoe drops with this. I remember Coach Lanning being rather miffed about Fields just suddenly ghosting the team. It turns out there are monetary settlements that have to happen in order to leave mid-season now due to NIL contracts. The amount here is around $10k + interest, which I think qualifies for small claims court. It feels like there is a punitive element to this action, which is interesting. I wonder if it is worth the possible negative press, although I guess it could prevent others from doing the same thing in the future.

The amount is $40k that UO graciously knocked down to $10k, IF he repaid it. He decided to ignore it

Actually, what's being reported, is that Fields owed UO $39,882. Oregon agreed to waive $10K if he paid $29,882 by 4-20 (lol). He did not make the payment on time, so UO is suing for the remaining $10K plus interest they have incurred since April 1st.

Crazy either way. Why not stick it out through the playoffs? Then transfer when the year is over. It’s not like he couldn’t have told OU he would be transferring there after he fulfilled his 2025-26 season.

Hopefully this lawsuit accomplishes one thing. Guys stop leaving before the season ends. Like that clown that left us the week we lost lost of our RB to go to UW.

Not that I disagree with this but can the UofO also sue Stein and Tosh for clearly not giving it 100% for the Peach Bowl while also getting paid playoff bonuses for the team making it that far?

And how is the organization to prove that they gave less than best effort?

My point is that it feels like there has been a double standard for years between coaches and players. Players we expect to “stick it out” meanwhile coaches ditch before the playoffs and leave teams that are legit title contenders. I think the double standard needs to end and players AND coaches need to stick it out through the playoffs. Portal should not open until after the national championship and AD’s should be prohibited from contacting other coaches also until after the natty.

But common sense doesn’t isn’t common with college football.

That’s an entire different issue. I’ve said for awhile now, the NCAA can enforce rules on coaches. They need to adopt the nfl rules, making a school have to ask permission to interview a potential coach. And also make them not be able to hire a guy until their season is done. Unless the current job agrees to allowing them to hire said coach earlier.

Ask Indiana DC Haines what he thinks about Steiner preparation for the last game.

We all know they half assed it, but it's one thing to visibly see it, it's another thing to actually question them about it and they give the response "i gave it everything i had, it was just a bad game." There's no way to actually prove that they didn't give two shits about that game

I think lawsuits like this one are going to be much more common as players transfer and don't fulfill their end of the revenue/NIL deals that they signed. While this seems somewhat petty to many on Oregon's part, it's necessary to keep people held to account when they sign deals.
