Difference in coordinator performance so far…

I find this tweet very interesting and also shows those who were calling for Hampton to be fired were very incorrect. This study looks at if the coordinators stayed the same, with the returning resources, what the offense/defense would be expected to be ranked.
While Hampton isn’t first amongst DC’s, so far he has elevated the defense in 2026. I know there were some early struggles, but I put more blame on the offense for not being able to keep the ball, the defense was on the field for 87 snaps against Oklahoma State, and that’s unreal with the game not going into OT. Oregon’s offense relying on explosion plays and not being able to keep a drive going put the defense in a bad situation, but no doubt early in the season the defense underperformed. But since the bye week, the defense has been lights out.
Meanwhile Mehringer is the lowest ranked amongst all new coordinators, both offensive and defensive. I still don’t think it’s all his fault, for example Stein left just in time before he got to realize Terry wasn’t coaching anyone up, in fact he was coaching players down, and relied on transfers to cover up his deficiencies. But to experience such a drop off it does show that Drew is in over his head and not ready for this job.
Crazy how Dan had a slam dunk DC hire and a horrible OC hire. Hopefully Dan can retain his defensive coaching staff and bring in a top notch OC who can take full control of the offense.

Yeah outside of the first two games, Hampton’s D has been formidable.

We could of got many of those guys on the list if we wanted. Painful 20/20 hindsight.

I really don't get why some people instantly shoot down Chip Kelly as an option, or say he's overrated, or figured out, etc. That dude is an offensive genius and he will never be "figured out." He's the one who knocks.

He’s arguably the best offensive mind of our generation, but clearly he’s not fit to be a head coach, outside of Oregon he hasn’t been successful as a head coach so I think that causes people to come to a false conclusion as to how he’d do as OC.
I think to some people he runs gimmick offenses, and I think people want to see a more NFL style offense with the weapons Oregon is able to get. I personally disagree with that as Chip showed after the Ohio State natty he is able to adjust his offense to the players/talent he has, and he even said so after the natty win when he said he finally learned that he needs to adapt to the players he has, not force his players to adapt to him.
While I’d love to see Chip return to Oregon, I’m not so sure he wants to, and I’ve also heard he and Dan don’t like each other. Hopefully if that’s true they are both mature enough to see that they would actually be a perfect fit for each other and that together they could create something special at Oregon. Just imagine Dan and Chris’s defense with Chip’s offense….

I don't think anyone shoots him down as an option due to ability as an OC. I just don't see a scenario where he wants to come back to Oregon as an OC. It's one thing to do it at places where you've never coached, but I think to come back to the place where you were once revered as the best HC to have been there is something else. Plus, I've heard rumors he prefers the big city, which was a draw to Northwestern. I think everyone wonders why they aren't going after him, but don't consider that maybe he doesn't want to come back.

^^^ This is what I think as well. I don't believe Chip wants to come back here. It's a shame because he is potentially a perfect OC. What we want is a great offensive mind with experience and no need to further prove himself at the head coaching level. I stop short of saying Chip fits this category perfectly because one is never sure if he is angling to become a head coach again.
