Baxter discussing possible sanctions:

"but he told me the worst that could happen would be some losses taken away but nothing that would affect me or my teammates in the future"

Losses taken away? WTF? I think this was a slip up

He is talking about USC. That truly may be the worst that could happen. Geez, let's hope the "best" doesn't happen. USC might be awarded even more championships. Soon they will have as many championships as UW fans think Washington has.

He must have meant to say "wins". Taking losses away would be a benefit.

Or kiffin is an even better spinmeister than I had ever imagined.

The thing is, he's probably right. Unless the NCAA can prove that the athletic department or coaching staff had previous knowledge of the extra benefits to Bush or McKnight, that's about all that will happen. Proving that is extremely difficult to do.

i don't think there is a chance in hell Kiffin could know what type of sanctions SC will/won't get. Total BS.

Sounds like the kind of reasoning some teenage boys use to get their way... "Trust me, Baby! I won't... etc., etc., etc."

You get the picture.

I wouldn't buy a used car from the guy, either.

I said this before. This is USC we are talking about.. the only thing the NCAA will do is slap them on the hand and tell them to play fairly. Taking away wins will do nothing to them. They can still recruit whoever and however they want. Bottom line is it is one of the big boys and no way even if coaching staff and administration knows about the benefits they will ever be put on probation. NCAA would lose to much money by doing so.

Absolutely, Kiffy is the king of BS spin. Too bad these recruits can't see through that little conboy.

You mean like Alabama? Miami? SMU? All these programs were/are "big boys" too. All were sanctioned fairly severely by the NCAA

And all were far, far, FAR more blatant and obvious than USC. Alabama was placed on probation in 1995 and five years later they are caught paying 5 figures to get high school players. Immediate repeat offender and they get a 2 year bowl ban and lose a few scholies? Wow, way to throw the book at them. They were sanctioned again just last year (3 times in 14 years) but it didn't stop a Heisman, a NC trophy, and a top 5 recruiting class.

My guess, SC will vacate wins from five year ago (big deal) and lose a couple of scholarships. Maybe they will have to repay some championship game earnings. No big deal to them.

I won't be shocked if the eventual punishment is close to what Kiffin described, but keep in mind that in re to "proof", the NCAA isn't a court of law. They don't have to actually have "proof" of anything. If they feel the collected body of evidence points to a pattern of "out of control" events, etc. then they can throw the book at them. The big question is will they? Many feel they will; many feel they won't. I've got a fairly jaded attitude re this whole SC thing, so I'm figuring on the latter. More along the lines of some stuff that will sting a little, but not whopping sanctions.

Does anyone now if there is any truth to the speculation that SC sent in self imposed penalties for football at the same time they did for bball and the NCAA accepted the bball but is possibly wanting to come down harder on the football program.

I am not sure Kiffin knows anything different than what the 5-6 guys that turned down the job originally knew. The networks all speculated the possibility of major sanctions as the reasons some of them declined the job offer. Kiffin just had such a hard-on for the job nothing, it seems would have kept him from taking it. So Kiffin just continues to spin his dream conclusion to these recruits. If the recruits buy it and SC goes down, it's their own damn fault.

By the way, How many Tennessee recruits are believed to be following Kiffin to SC, and how will that leave SC with the amount of current recruits they have? Anyone?
