Canzano now saying Avery Johnson

On his twitter today, Canzano said that UO is considering Avery Johnson. Hmm whats with the love for ex-NBA coaches? He may do good, but generally NBA coaches don't succeed at the NCAA level. That's why I would rather us get an excellent college assistant rather than a re-tread NBA coach.

For the most part I agree, although I like Avery and he was successful as an NBA coach.

I think his style would work in college. He won in the nba but he got fired because the players revolted against his drill sergeant style. College kids who make no money and can't rebel against their coach would buy right into what he's selling.

Yes there are a couple of rule changes and the NBA court maybe a little wider...... but the fundamentals are still the same.

Finally, we're on the right track!!

We are not getting "final four experience". We had college experience. We had a solid coach with Elite 8 experiences. I agree we had to move in a new direction. However, the coaches with the final four experience are the big guys (ie. Izzo, Pitino, etc.). There is no way any of those coaches are leaving their programs right now, our coaching search has made that clear.

Stop thinking college unless you're content with Randy Bennett, Ben Jacobson or Eric Reveno. In that case we might as well of kept Ernie.

"Big name", "final four experience" and "Oregon head coach" just don't go together.

The guys we should be talking to right now are Avery Johnson and Stan Van Gundy. Byron Scott would be perfect but I know for a fact he will be in Los Angeles next year unfortunately (unless he decides last minute to hold out for the Lakers job if Phil sets a retirement date).

You want a big splash? I'll let you tell me.... who sounds more appealing: Avery Johnson/Stan Van Gundy or Billy Gillespie/Eric Reveno?

i have no problem at all with Avery Johnson. very successful in the
nba. think about it, he was able to coach guys making millions who
if they didnt want to play they wouldnt. College would be a good
transition for him.
even if he is strict, thats what Ducks need. someone to guide them
and help them grow. someone who can get them all playing togeather.
stucture has been lacking. they need someone to push them. They
have the talent there. and with a guy like Johnson i think they can get
more talent here. id welcome someone like him here.

The only issue I have with Avery is that I don't see him staying at Oregon for very long. In fact I would be supervised if he would even consider the job..... At least a guy like Monty Williams is already familiar with the area and is raising a large family here.

That being said I would still give him a shot over some of these small school coaches

I would imagine he would connect well with the kids and would therefore be a good recruiter. Personally I would like to see him as the next Duck BB coach. He has had success and people know his name, he should be able to get the fans to fill the arena and hopefully get the team to the next level shortly.

Can he coach? Absolutely! But would he like doing the recruiting part, that's my biggest question. I think the reason his name is coming up is due to Kilkenny getting advice from PJ, and PJ worked with Avery in San Antonio, so you have to think there is some interest on Avery's part.

Recruiting is always the biggest question with pro coaches coming down to the college level. Some excel at it while others just can't seem to master it or don't care enough about it. Avery Johnson could appeal to recruits since he knows what it takes for players to excel in the NBA and would seem to be a good teacher. I think Monty Williams could do well at the college level since he's a good teacher and has a foot in the local AAU circuit in the NW.
