my opinion on the coaching search.
There has been a lot of talk about how Mr. Kilkenny is doing the search process(taking to long). my opinion is that Mr. Kilkenny, phil knight, and the other big time donnors at the university are viewing this a long term Business investment. one reason i believe this is that one of nike's biggest sales are in basketball, most people aren't surprised when a company can sometimes take 6 months to a year to fill jobs that require a lot of decision making powers. Most business investments are not short term make a big score with lots of risks they are more about the long haul. I understand we have two high regard recuirts that we could land, but to rush a coaching hire for a 18 year old kid that still might not even choice us. the coach is going to be here a lot longer so we need to let these guys that have made some pretty good business choices in the past go through the process.

But the coaching change was to fill the seats in the arena this year...a team with no one left isn't going to do that

Bottom line, this coaching search has been a failure.
We needed to have a coach 2 weeks ago! If more kids transfer (very likely) then our program will be in the shitter for the next 4-6 years no matter who we hire!
In the business of college sports you don't have the luxury to hold out....... there is good reason whenever coaching jobs open up they get filled within 7 to 10 days.

The coaching change was to improve the program. I think it's very possible we can still do that, even though this hire is way too late.pudgejeff wrote:But the coaching change was to fill the seats in the arena this year...a team with no one left isn't going to do that

early on they will fill the seats. New arena, new coach. everyone will be
wanting to check both out. I think people will give them a chance. but the
expectations have now been raised. If they win then they have no worries.
but if the product isnt an improvement then they will see lots of empty seats.
The bar has been raised. win early and often.

So go follow Kent wherever he goes next and don't root for the ducks anymore. Firing Kent was the right move, no matter how long the coaching search takes. Even if it takes a few years to rebuild, the team couldn't be worse than they were the last few seasons. The coaching change was made because Kent was a bad coach.

If what you say is true, then they haven't thought it out all that well.Maxxwell32 wrote:There has been a lot of talk about how Mr. Its not going to be a long term investment, if the new coach doesn't come in and succeed. Just how many years of bottom half finishes and half full Knight Arenas do you really think they are going to let the new coach have?
The statement that the coach is going to be here for a lot longer than a recruit is not neccessarily true. Many coaching jobs don't last more than 4 years, if the coach either fails (fired) or succeeds(and gets a better opportunity). So what happens if the coach doesn't land any recruits this year, players defect and we aren't able to improve much over the next couple seasons? And THEN the giant sophomore class leaves the new coach starting over from scratch after 2 bad years. You really think he's going to get more than 4 years, if none of them have been successfull?
The problem is that in this "long term business investment", its not only about getting a good coach. Its about putting that coach in a good position. 6 Pac-10 schools have fired coaches in the last decade. UO, OSU, WSU, Cal, UCLA, and ASU. As bad as the last couple years were for us, our 7 conference wins was the most that any team had in the season they fired their coach. Cal had 6 wins, and nobody else had more than 4. At 16-16, only us and Cal had .500 or better record in the season we fired our coach, and Cal won the conference 2 years later.
As disapointing as things have been here, we were left with a better situation than most teams when they fire their coach. This wasn't a "rebuild from scratch" situation. There was/is some talent here, and an opportunity to come in and be successfull. The longer this goes on, the less that is true and it is becoming a rebuild from scratch job.

I'm a Duck fan not a Kent fan...I just felt he was the coach for the job...And oh yes they can get worse than the last few seasons...much worse

You do realize the arena doesn't open til pac-10 play...Meaning that if this team is as terrible as it's looking it might be with a few more departures and no success on getting incoming recruits this class then we will all have seen them play before the arena opens and all those people who aren't gonna just go to the games to go see the ducks like a lot of us will aren't gonna go and that arena is not gonna be full...I'll be there no matter as I'm sure a lot of you will...I just wish it was to watch this team on their journey the tournament this year and a deep run next year instead of this disaster the PK's and boosters have created

Ok then, please explain. Unless I'm missing something, there is no 11th place in the pac-10. Look at what the team did the last 6-7 years under Kent and explain how things were going so well.

Yeah, because we all know they would have been a top ten/definite sweet 16 team if Kent was the coach.

Re: my opinion on the coaching search.
Right cause that's what was said there...And if you don't think this team was on it's way to the tourney next year i'm not sure what you were watching...With adding Jones and another guy if Catron doesn't come back or just Jones and keeping catron, it becomes a more mature team with two stud young guys in Jones and Wilson...the next year everyone's another year older and more mature and we replace LL with a guy like Wroten or another top recruit and have a team loaded with seniors, ya I'd say they be poised to make a tourney run, doesn't guarantee anything but would for sure be in a whole hell of a lot better shape than they're gonna be in now...And yes I do get to keep with the what ifs until we have a new coach, at that point he'll be our coach and that'll be thatduckgrad99 wrote:pudgejeff wrote:duckfan22 wrote:early on they will fill the seats.
