Too bad he didn't stay but I can see how hard it would be to pass up an opportunity to coach at Kentucky and be closer to home. Hopefully Altman can hire some assistants that were as good of recruiters as Payne.

ya hopefully Altman can bring in a recruiter who can recruit up to par with Payne and not just recruit guys that would fit at Creighton

With Payne gone I'm sure Altman will only go after D-2 type players. Just Like Chip recruits only guys that would fit at New Hampshire. Both got a huge uprgrade in program & conference but are unable to get players that are any better.

Huh? Chip only recruits guys that fit New Hampshire? Seastrunk is only
a d2 player? 13th best recruiting class in the country, only with d2 players.
Altman hasn't even had a full season to recruit and we already know what kind of players he's gonna bring in? Maybe im missing something here.
Look at some of the recruits chip has coming here. these guys are being
recruited by all the big boys. but like i said maybe im missing something in

Again, this was expected, but still disappointing. No one can deny however that coaching at Kentucky is far better than coaching at Oregon. A position at Kentucky is better than any job in the Pac 10 other than at UCLA and maybe Arizona (I'd much rather live in Tucson than Lexington and Arizona is still a very good basketball school).

I feel like I'm beating a dead horse, but Yasir Rosemond must be retained. The players love him and he has done a terrific job in the few years that he has been here. Brian Fish sounds like he should be a solid assistant, but he's also never been an assistant coach at a program in a BCS conference.

Altman will have a tougher time since Chip took over a program that is fairly consistent and had just come off a 10-win season while Altman is inheriting an inconsistent program that is coming off 2 losing seasons and had numerous transfers in the off-season. I don't envy Altman at all right now but I think he'll get the program headed in the right direction if he can get good assistants and brings in talented recruits who can fit his system.

Well damn, would have been nice to keep Payne, but let's see what Fish can do..

Yeah I don't think Altman will have it easy at all. Chip took over a ready made program on the verge of becoming elite. Altman is taking over a program that is really a nobody on the basketball scene.

The point I was making was OF COURSE Altman isn't just going to get Creighton level players. I don't understand where all these people are coming from that think Altman is just happy bringing over mid-major talent. I've seen about 50 comments from people worried about Altman's recruiting, "Well I hope he isn't just gonna get the same guys he would at Creighton." ... Well no freaking kidding. He's just taken over a decent program in one of the best conferences in the nation. He's not going to recruit the type of guys he would have at Creighton.

O-live had a article yesterday and today that talked about
Altman calling high school coaches in the state just to
introduce himself and talk. This is something Ernie didnt do.
most of the states high school coaches he never talked to.
I believe with Altmans work ethic will not only rub off on
his players but also the fans and recruits. He has gotten here
and gone right to work. Altman knows what he's gotten himself
into. The team has some talent. they have under achieved and
hopefully Altman gets them to play at a much higher level. i'm not
worried about assistant coaches. I wouldnt mind seeing rosemond stay.
I wouldnt mind seeing Freddie Jones get a chance. Good connections
in state and loves this school. but thats just a personnel choice. I'm one
for giving a coach a chance and the benefit of the doubt.

I could see Rosemond staying since he has some history with the players and they will buy into what Altman is selling if Rosemond is on board. As for Jones, he probably has another couple years of pro ball in but he may want to get his start in coaching now that a spot at Oregon is open. I suspect though that Altman will go after some X's and O's guys to help him on the bench, like Dunlap was supposed to be with Kent.

Almost makes one wonder if part of the reason Dunlap hasn't made a move has something to do with Altman...

I would call Payne a good recruiter but not a great recruiter. I'm not saying he won't be missed, but I think we will be fine without him, especially if we start to win under Altman. I'm not sure what year Payne got here, but he didn't exactly reel in a ton of 4 and 5 star players since 2005.

He got here in 2004 so I think he may have helped recruit the class with Bryce, Malik, and Maarty, but don't quote me on that since I'm not sure what time of the year he came in. Other than that class and the 2008 class, I don't think he really hasn't landed any big name recruits.
