Altman already calling local HS coaches

Altman spent his free time in the last few weeks coordinating weight training and setting up the infrastructure of his program. But more impressively, he went down a list and dialed the cellular phones of area high school coaches.

Not because he's running a camp and needs the participation. Not because he wants to talk about a recruit. Not because he needs help. But just because.

Yeah, Altman wanted nothing more than to say hello. Because he recognizes how far that introduction might get him.

Altman introduced himself as the new Ducks coach. He asked the high school coaches how long they'd been working in the area. He told them to give him a call if they ever had questions, and he invited the coaches to stop into an open gym if they were ever in Eugene.

The calls lasted about five minutes each. And consider those exchanges a breath of fresh air around here.

Good to see. In state recruiting should be by far the biggest priority for the ducks bball team. There's plenty of talent here..

that was a nice piece. another one today on Brian Fish the assistant.
they just have a different feel to them as coaches. build with hard
work. Altman it seems got to work right off the airplane when he
got here.

Sounds like Jacobs in to it as well. now he's shooting three's. another threat
from the outside will always open things up in an offense.

Altman seems to be a better fundamental and skill coach than Kent ever was. Let's see if he'll be a better game coach as well (which I bet he will).

I'm pretty new to this board, so I don't know what the talk was when Altman was hired, but the scout board was up in arms. I follow mid-major basketball very closely (USU student, go aggies), and I can tell you I was relieved when he was hired for Oregon. Big time coaches win big time games and titles, but they just aren't clean. Calipari. Calhoun. They get talent however they can and ride their players to success. Not to say they aren't great coaches as well, they just aren't completely ethical all the time.

Altman is the opposite, IMO. He will teach the players. His players will play defense first. They will want to win for team pride, not to raise NBA stock. This is how altman has coached his whole life, and he would not have taken the job at oregon if he didn't strongly feel he could continue these habits.

Boom, Kent wasn't a real coach. He relied on good recruits and great PGs to give him 2 amazing seasons, the rest of Kent's career here was mediocre. It was fun to watch Kent's high offensive teams player, when they were good, but it was even more brutal to watch them at their worst.

With Altman, I have a feeling we'll see a lot more close games and a more functional team.

Thanks for the insight on Altman USU. Welcome to the board. I've been seeing you post on educk for the past couple months or so & always liked what you had to say. Glad you made the jump over to C4Qs. You won't find a better board.

I wasn't enamored with him when he was first hired but after reading about him and then watching his press conference when he was introduced, he sold me. Now with him coaching the players now, there have been several newspaper articles and TV stories about him that make me feel glad he came here.

Maybe we shall see what Kansas Stte lost out on when Altman jumped to Creighton 16 seasons ago.

I, for one, am cautiously optimistic.

I definitely like some of what I see, so far.

As far as hiring assistant coaches, what is really the rush?

St. Johns still hasn't officially filled out their new staff, and several other programs ar still working on the same process.

Altman has a limited time to work with his team in the hands on practice sessions. He is probably pretty busy handling that.
