Devoe Joseph transferring from Minnesota to Oregon

Joseph confirms transfer to Oregon

Former Gophers shooting guard Devoe Joseph confirmed Sunday night that he will transfer to the University of Oregon.

"Yes," Joseph replied via text message when asked if he planned to transfer to the school.

Joseph told the Star Tribune that he was unavailable for a phone interview Sunday night.

But his AAU coach and mentor, Ro Russell, said Joseph chose the school in part because of its high-paced offense. Dana Altman, the former Creighton coach, is in his first year at the school. The Ducks are 7-9 overall and 0-4 in the Pacific-10 Conference.

Russell said Charlotte, West Virginia and Baylor all expressed interest in Joseph, who left the Gophers last week.
The Good: 11.3 PPG/2.3 REB/3.5 AST/38.1 3-PT%. Was a 4 star player coming out of high school. Supposedly a great outside shooter, solid scorer, good ball handler (one of the knocks against him coming out of HS), combo guard (can play both the 1 and the 2)
The Bad: Was suspended indefinitely for "violation of team rules". After doing some research, it sounds like he was smoking weed and he failed a drug. Not surprising considering that he's Canadian  Also makes sense why he wanted to transfer to Oregon.

Tubby Smith said that he was disappointed that Joseph transferred, so he definitely wasn't kicked off of the team. Hopefully he adheres to Altman's rules once he gets here. When I first read about this, I wasn't too happy about it. After finding out that it was 'just" weed, I'm ok with it.

He's a junior. It sounds like we'll only have him for one year, but he should be able to practice with the team immediately. My guess is that he takes Strowbridge's scholarship next year. Definitely a huge upgrade over Strowbridge (arguably the worst player on the team)

This team desperately needs talent. Apparently, Joseph was Minnesota's best player last season around tournament time. Tubby Smith was expecting him to step up as the team's leader.

Good to see that Jabari Brown will have some help next season.
“If everybody in this room just want to be real with themselves, this game could have went either way,” he said. “We turned the ball over a lot. We beat ourself. Just be real with yourself right now. We beat ourself.”

I think Oregon may actually have to redshirt him next season, so he's gonna be sitting out for a year and a half. He must really hate Tubby Smith if he's willing to wait that long to play. Not a bad move for Oregon since Loyd, Singler, and the big German will be the only other upperclassmen on the team in 2012 (unless Altman gets more transfers).

It appears that Altman has a better understanding of how to balance classes than Ernie did.

I have read several articles on this situation, and all say he will be eligible in December.

Joseph should be enrolled this week, and may be a valuable practice asset in developing the remaining Ducks.

Has good size at 6-4, too.

Good pick up if he can keep his act together off the court. I actually remember Devoe out of high school because my friend runs a ST Johns site. He was recruited by some good programs, and was a top 100 players by most recruiting sites.

It'll be great to have a player with some experience who IS ALSO TALENTED to help this team.

We only got him for another year but seems questionable since this team needs some post players and there won't be any more openings. One thing he will provide is some shooting, but it does sound like he's a bit of headcase from some of the comments, although it could just be sour grapes. This transfer probably means Altman is not going to sign another player in the spring, as there are 13 scholarships now taken for next, or he's still recruiting just to make sure he can fill a spot if someone transfers after this season. The 2012 recruiting class is really going to determine the timeline for Altman's rebuilding efforts since there's going to be 6 spots open for it and will need some players that can contribute instantly.

Sweetness. This team could actually be pretty good by next year. Young talent to go with some upperclassmen like JJ, Armstead & this Joseph kid seems like a pretty good formula.

Wow, it's too bad we will only have him for one season. Rivals had him as the #10 shooting guard out of high school and he had offers from some major schools including Kansas. I think Oregon will be much better next season. Now it's time to recruit some "big men".

Disappointing that we'll only have him for conference play next season.

PG: Joseph, Armstead, Loyd, Barron, Kingma
SG: Brown, Teondre, Sim
SF: Singler
PF: Jacob, Nared
C: Kuemper, Big German

That's 13 players on scholarship, which means that the team is full. Does Altman encourage Armstead to transfer? Does Altman ask Sim to pay his own way for his senior season (scholarships are only guaranteed on an annual basis)? If Oregon wants to add a guy like Jarion Henry, then a move needs to be made. It might even be possible that Teondre Williams will be forced out.

This is, um... no. None of these things will happen.

Armstead might transfer, I don't know, but Altman isn't going to force out a senior. Altman would be BUTCHERED on the recruiting trail for taking Sim's scholarship away. Teondre being forced out? No.

I highly doubt Seifert will be back, but that's easier to get around because it doesn't appear he was recruited to come here as much as he just kind of showed up a couple days into fall term and we thought we'd take a flier on some height.

As for your depth chart, Teondre hasn't played SG all year, and Devoe Joseph is a SG, not a point. Kuemper's also not going to start as a freshman, we have a very good returning senior center. IF everything stays the same with no additional recruits (and no defections), I think we'll see something closer resembling:

Armstead/Loyd/Barron
Brown/Joseph/Kingma/Sim
Singler/Teondre
Nared/Singler/Kuemper
Jacob/Kuemper/Seifert

Romar's done it. Calipari's done it. It definitely is not uncommon, especially when a new coach comes in. A lot of times, coaches want to bring in their own players. My guess is that Altman isn't very impressed with what he's seen from Sim nor Teondre. Altman wouldn't necessarily "force" Teondre out, but he'd probably give him a hint that he won't get much playing time if he decides to stay here. Coaches encourage players to transfer all the time.

We'll see. Altman absolutely invited him here. I don't think anyone really expected him to contribute this year. Kind of odd to recruit a raw player from a foreign country and then bail on him after a year.

Teondre is a SG, he's only playing SF out of necessity. Since Jamil Wilson, Matt Humphrey, and Josh Crittle transferred and Mike Dunigan left the program, Oregon has had to play guys out of position. Joevan Catron is absolutely not a center. Singler has played PF when Oregon has gone small. Both Nared and Jacob have played center, even though they are clearly PF's.

It's going to be interesting to see how the roster shapes up next season and how Altman uses what he does get.
