feel vindicated after watching what solid coaching cqn do for a basketball team? I took a lot of heat on some

boards for bitchin about ol' EK and his inability to "coach his way out of a wet paper bag." I know it's early, but a little birdie told me Altman's pretty good.
"Move!...move!...move!"
Just doesn't cut it does it?

I was one who said give Altman a chance. One has to believe the
heat and pressure is on Altman. New arena. Big donors with high
expectations. His track record at a mid major was very good.
Hi regards from some very outstanding coaches. Everything pointed
to this being a good hire. Now he's showing why we should be patient
and behind him. Were seeing a real offense, were seeing actual defense.
Were watching kids playing extremely hard. We are seeing a coach who
takes the blame in a loss. And this team is undersized, not deep in
talent. Altman in such a short time has taken someone else's players for
the most buying into what they are being taught. It also looks like they
are having more fun to.

In a story about Kent today in the Register-Guard, Kent was visiting with coaches around the country and he said he came away from those meetings feeling like he was doing things right. Whatever he needs to think to put him to sleep at night.

It's still way early and will likely come down to recruiting.
Remember the Beevs were saying the same things after Craig Robinson's first year....

I agree, I think Altman is doing an excellent job I can't wait till he gets a whole team to work with...so far so good!
Lets not bash EK and yes I agree I wanted him fired even before he was but he was what he was and he put us the map so lets move forward and be happy we have Altman.

Yeah, I don't think we should bash Kent ruthlessly, but he did have his faults that did him in. We'll all be forever grateful for him getting the program to a level where a new arena was possible.

I will give Ernie Kent the credit he deserves no more, no less. He got immediate results after
taking over for the whiny Green. He took the Ducks to the NIT semifinals, two Elite 8 finishes
and all the while developing some very good players.
He also got a lot of positive press, a nice big contract and a nice big payout
when he left.
But he also brought in a group of highly talented players that needed him to coach them in the
finer points of the game and he failed. Kent's talents lay in recruiting talent, not
in adapting last minute game plan strategies. And when his team needed to pointed out
the X's and O's, they crumbled.
Now that he's in the broadcaster's chair, he can sell any story he wants. He was given ample
time to right the ship, which he didn't. Altman was left to clean up this mess and he has done
a bang up job (so far.)

Well Altman's already got a top class coming in. And if he can recruit with even relative consistency he'll be doing a better job than Kent did in that department. Kent had some great classes but he had even more terrible ones. Which IMO was a big cause of his struggles. You pull in Malik, Bryce, Oguchi & Luenen but absolutely nothing in between. So of course once those guys were gone he had exactly what he had recruited, nothing. Then comes a bunch of talented but undeveloped freshman. Which was an absolute worst case scenario for Kent.
No one to blame but himself. And if there's anyone to compare CR to it's Kent. Great recruiter/salesman but can't seem to get his team to buy in. Altman coached circles around him last Saturday.

Yes. I started saying Kent had peaked/was never going to take us to a level he hadn't already achieved in 2003, Rid's last year where we were still stacked and finished 5th in the Pac-10/needed a good showing in the Pac tourney (we ended up winning it) just to make it into the NCAA Tournament.
Most people thought it was absurd, considering we were just in the Elite Eight and we had just inked the 'Class of the Century', but the writing was on the wall. Ernie could coach a team to the Elite Eight tomorrow if he had the right pieces, the problem is that anything short of an All American PG/2 additional NBA Draft picks was mediocre-to-awful.

Craig Robinson is a decent coach...much better than Kent.

And what do you base that off? Kent at least has a couple elite 8's on his resume. Five seasons in as a college coach, and Robinson hasn't shown much improvement nor does he stand any remote chance of even making an ncaa tournament anytime soon.

I'm wasn't a Kent hater, just a UO fan that want's to see a team play hard and looks like they have good solid coaching, which he didn't the last 4-5 years. That said Robinson is the worst coach in the Pac-10 right now, no way is he better than Kent. If OS can beat Stanford tonight, it will change putting Dawkins at the bottom, but Robinson is WAY overrated.

His team has good ball movement on offense and play solid defense.......I shouldn't have to tell you that what Robinson is currently working with isn't half as good as what Kent had during his elite eight runs.
Dana Altman's resume isn't nearly good as Kent's either, but it's still easy to see that he's a better coach.
But like I said earlier... It comes down to recruiting. Which is were Kent's success came from... not coaching.

Beavers 2009 class was pretty good. Better than most Kent's classes outside of probably the Malik, Bryce, Oguchi, Leunen one. Robinson's recruiting is fine, maybe not as good as Kent's but close enough to be able to have similar success to Kent. The biggest difference is Kent was able to pull in a 5 star stud every 4-5 seasons (Malik, Brooks, Ridnour).
IMO if Robinson was that much better of a coach then Kent, then the Beavers should be one of the better teams in the Pac-10, especially in an extremely down year like this season. But instead, they are one of the bottom teams of the Pac-10. Robinson is not a good coach at all, their offense can get dull in a hurry. While their defense is usually pretty stellar, it has not be as effective this season as it has in the previous two years. Robinson won't be around for long IMO.
And Altman's resume is much more impressive. In just his 3rd year of coaching at Kansas State, he made the NCAA tournament. And in his last 12 seasons in coaching, he's made it to 7 NCAA tournaments. That's more than NCAA tournament's then Ernie Kent has made in his 20 years of coaching. Just saying, Altman is an exceptional coach. Robinson and Kent are in the same boat IMO.
