It's because there are no guidelines as to what and when threads should be locked. This board is run as a dictatorship. But the people are mostly happy, so whatcha gonna do?

I hadn't even noticed threads getting locked. How often does it happen?

Not too often but usually when the topic loses its focus completely or gets too heated.

as someone who helped get this board started, i have no problems stating how i feel. being critical of someone's post is not the same as being derogatory towards them and too often if someone sounds too critical, people get butt hurt too quickly. further, with everybody whining about the board being slow, locking a thread that has veered off-course doesn't help to keep the board active.

I'm gonna lock this thread.

But really, each section has a specific title & things that should to be discussed. A little diversion or argument here & there is fine. But if you want to argue politics or land development that goes 10 pages long, do it in the off topic section. TK has said it plenty of times, a major off topic discussion belongs in the off-topic section. I come into the War Room to discuss recruiting & its really annoying when there's 3-4 threads all on things that have nothing to do with recruiting. The mods are just keeping things organized.

Some of these threads start to deviate far from the original subject and then seem to go on and on and on to where only a few guys are pissing at each other and I'm probably guilty of that a few times too. It's starts to get boring for the rest. I probably would have locked some of those threads way before TK1 did.

then you would simply move the thread to off-topic instead of locking it.

I don't follow why people get up in arms if a thread doesn't stay on a topic they are interested in. Can't they just not read it and move on to the next thread?

The posts could just be moved to a new thread if organization is the issue.

To throw my two cents in. I'm on the same page as Wheaton and D07. I guess part of the beauty/genius I find in this type of mass communication is the dialogue that naturally occurs within different contexts. Personally I find, as an easy example, threads like the DaT one interesting; if nothing else for the direction it took and the different opinions and information being offered. These conversations may seem off-beat but are still at least tangentially relevant to the topic at hand (in that instance population density, sprawl, the attractiveness of different locales as it may pertain to recruiting).

I don't know. Locking a thread, and for all intents and purposes ending a dialogue, seems a heavy handed way of dealing with organizational issues when alternatives like renaming threads or moving their locations exist. Like I said though, just one man's opinion.

I'm not the one locking the threads, I'm just giving my opinion on why I think they're being locked. So to get a final answer you'll havta talk to TK1.
