Auburn University says someone deliberately poisoned trees at Toomer's Corner, where fans have long celebrated big wins and hundreds gathered after the Tigers won the football national championship on Jan. 10.

Auburn discovered the poisoning after taking soil samples on Jan. 28, a day after a man called a syndicated radio show based in Birmingham saying he had used the herbicide on the trees.

"The weekend after the Iron Bowl, I went to Auburn, Ala., because I live 30 miles away, and I poisoned the Toomer's trees," the caller told The Paul Finebaum Radio Show, saying he was at the Iron Bowl.

Calling himself "Al from Dadeville," he said he used Spike 80DF, also known as tebuthiuron, and the trees "definitely will die." The caller signed off with, "Roll Damn Tide."

It will be interesting to see if any Auburrn fans attemp to one up this.

Damaging property is one thing, but destroying such a thing as the Toomer's Corner Oaks is ridiculous.

I'm no tree hugger (Grew up in a logging family, worked in wood products industry for 25 years), but there is a heritage lost when something like this is gone. It's a big part of their whole community.

here's the guy who's been caught for poisoning the trees, probably shouldn't have been as specific as he was about his location on the air,

Fitting that someone so careless with tradition could also be so unintelligent as to literally give away their locatiom

Over at AUFamily almost all of the talk is about NOT responding and simply coming up with a new way to keep that spirit alive

Found this on a Bama message board...

I hope they find this douche, put him in jail for about ten years, then fine him so heavily that he will be bankrupt for the rest of his life……then make him do community service until he is too old to physically be able to do it……his community service?…..cleaning up all of the toilet paper after auburn wins wearing a placard that says “I’m the a$$hole that poisoned the trees”…..and he must drink anything that is offered to him by passing fans…..

What a great idea! I cant think of a better punishment, can you imagine the inner torture he'd endure having to clean that up every weekend? Haha...
