Draft Preview 89

Post by Zyme »

Over the next few days I will be giving an early look at the up coming prospects for the upcoming draft. This is only an early looks the scouts are only getting their first look at the prospects and their final impressions may change by the end as they get a better look at the prospects as we get closer to the draft.

Rumors will fly but there is one big piece of Intel that I can share with you:

News is out of the north as USSR has announced a change in their policies about athletes abroad. In an effort to better show the glories of what their socialist brotherhood has to offer, Soviet officials are allowing citizen to freely compete abroad. Following this announcement, the Soviet Basketball team held a joint press conference and announced that the entire team will be exploring their draft stock, including Lithuanian SSR standouts Arvydas Sabonis and Sarunas Marciulionis. Names from the USSR besides to keep an eye on for their status are Uzbek SSR Valeri Tikhonenko, Latvian SSR Igors Miglinieks, Estonian SSR Tiit Sokk, Ukrainian SSR Alexander Volkov and Valery Goborov. Some of the above, including the great Lithuanian sniper Rimas Kurtinaitis is seen as unlikely as his age (28) may be more likely to explore options at the large European clubs like FC Barcelona.

This is going to be a great draft to start things off. Sabonis and the Admiral alone is top heavy and there are going to be several others as well.

I am building the classes, UOTK1 will be doing final proofing. The final ratings may change based upon his final input. If so, the scouts' first look got it wrong.

Okay, so you make the determination on who will be in the draft?

Yeah Zyme is making the file, thanks for your help Zyme.

We've already discussed rough ratings and his ratings he proposed to me are great. Obviously though, I'll tweak potentials, and perhaps even some other ratings. But all in all, what you see from zyme's previews will be very close to the actual file.

Thanks again Zyme,

In response to the Soviet press conference yesterday, the Yugoslavian team held a joint press conference in Zagreb. Speculation leading up to the draft seemed to indicate Vlade Divac would be heading into the draft, and would likely be a top pick should he choose to enter. When pressed all he would answer is, "I am reviewing all my options". This indecisiveness didn't stop Drazen Petrovic, one of Europe's top scorers, from saying he would like to test himself in the NBA. Other names to watch are Dino Radja, Zarko Paspalj, Toni Kukoc, Jure Zdovc, and Aleksandar Dordevic. With these two dynamic rosters exploring their options this draft looks to take on a very European flavour.

Today's news is from the homefront. Despite failing his first try, Shawn Kemp has passed, if only just, his SATs. He will be attending Kentucky this fall.

Why not just enter everyone who entered in the '89?

With the euros, there is a backlog with the players who were drafted earlier like sabas and didnt come over until later. If all were put in this draft would be way too loaded.

Well spread the Euros throughout the years. Keep the players that actually entered in.

I appreciate your perepective, but it creates a sense of uncertainty when exactly players will come out. Making it harder to plan out exactly who will be coming out when. Will Shaq come out in 92 like normal, or will he stay until his senior season or jump early. If you knew he was coming always in 92 and you wanted him bad enough you would stock up on picks. With the uncertanty, is may be an older Motombo or even none of the above and have a down draft. It creates more variability within the draft classes and more unique classes. This one, however, will have most every name that was normally in the draft.
