This isn't about bartering. This is about the college players paying for something with signed memorabilia. This is the textbook example of how an athlete can directly profit from being a college football player. The NCAA has never allowed this to happen.

Besides the idea of preventing athletes from providing their services to the highest bidder, most of these rules are specifically designed to prevent schools from providing student athletes a privilege that is not available to the general student population.

Does the general student body at a place such as tOSU receive signed parphernalia, or personal awards such as Rose Bowl rings or "Sportsmanship" trophies?

I didn't think so.

You don't have to scratch to far beneath the surface to find examples, either.

Consider the charter planes once used by the Ducks to bring in groups of recruits, in order to get around the problems inherent in scheduling regular flights in and out of Eugene's Mahlon Sweet Airport.

Another example would be the X-Boxes that the NCAA reportedly nixed in the Oregon locker room.

There is a fine line weaving through the NCAA regulation book that must be followed, to the best of the AD's ability.

Not a simple task, and that is why most major institutions have a "Compliance Department".
