Army vs SMU
Figured I'd start making game threads for the other bowl games. Frankly, games like these are why I hate bowl games at times. Like we really want to watch 2 6-loss teams battle it out...
Army needs to win though so I move up in my pick em standings, so go Army.

June Jones knows how to turn these bottom-tier D1 schools into winners.Biggus Duckus wrote:I like the story behind this game. Army's first bowl appearance since 1996. SMU finally on the rise again after 20+ years of crappiness.
Gotta love June Jones being successful, but I'm probably gonna root for Army in this one.

Disappointed that Army is not wearing their camo unis. I'm pulling for them anyway.
Plus every time I think about SMU, they remind me how much Craig James drives me crazy.

Yeah, I think about cheating and how annoying James is.amazon wrote:

I just watched ESPN's 30 for 30 "Pony Express", detailing how out of control SMU was and how the death penalty effected their program. To a certain extent I think the NCAA is haunted by the effects of their sanctions on SMU, which could explain their lack of consistency in meting out punishments.

It's sad that the NCAA appears to be haunted by the biggest example of them actually doing their job. The death penalty to SMU should be their crowning achievement and should be used to keep everyone else in check.nehalem wrote:I just watched ESPN's 30 for 30 "Pony Express", detailing how out of control SMU was and how the death penalty effected their program. I agree that the NCAA is likely haunted by the SMU death penalty. With what was going on a SMU, I don't blame them for doing it but the problem is that many others were doing the same thing and I'm not even sure they were being smarter about it.
The 30 for 30 show was very eye opening about what was going on in the SWC at the time.

For those who didn't know much about Texas football, and football in the South/MidWest it was an eye opener. The point that was lost in the Death Penalty was that so many other programs were just as guilty - sort of like the OSU players and small gifts - and they went after 1 program, which also happened to be the "new" player which only helped the other good ole boys.
I could care less who wins, I'm just glad to see SMU make a game out of it at this point.
