Free student athletic tickets in jeopardy

Even though I'm not affected by this, this would really suck for the students on this board and all the rest of the students at the U of O.

I graduate this June so I was screwed either way , but this is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. Has anyone ever heard of this type of thin at other schools? Do other schools offer tickets to students for free? Or is this shift not so unusual when compared to other Universities? I don't know...but I think the UOAD needs to step their game up because the last thing they need is students getting pissed off and boycotting games! The more I think about this the more pissed I get!

This is an important topic IMO and I worry stuck down here in the "other" section it might get missed! I think it is important as many people hear about this as possible. Mops, or other mods, is there a better place we can put this in order to get more exposure???

I don't think there are many schools that give free student tickets. Most SEC schools offer a student season ticket which is cheaper than a regular season ticket, but as far as I know there are very few top notch programs handing out free tickets.

When I was at the UO I loved the fact that student tickets where free....Well part of student fees, that we actually did pay something for. As a student I would have paid for tickets!!! But anyway, most schools do charge their students for tickets. They are at discount but they charge.

They charge $195 for season tickets for their students. Believe it or not I think they would still sell out the student section if they had to charge the students at UO. I just hope the Athletic Department would charge the students the same price they would charge the ASUO.

Pudge, did you even read the article? This is not the UO athletic dept, it is the student union saying they can no longer afford to purchase the tickets and then include them as part of the student fees.

As the father of a Univ of Michigan student, I can assure you that free tickets for students is not the norm.

This actually is a good thing. You constantly hear students complaining about not being able to get tickets to Football, and sometime BBall games. If a student now has to pay an additional fee in order to attend an athletic event, then maybe this will be more incentive for them to show up. It really isn't that big of a deal.

I disagree. While I wouldn't have minded paying the fees for sporting events, there are a lot of "die hard fans" that cannot afford an extra 50 bucks here and there. I don't care if other universities make their students pay for games. This has been just one additional benefit of attending the U of O, and this would be the worst time to do this given the economic times.

The sad thing is that student fees go up every year and tickets where part of those fees. Will student fees go up again this year and then have to pay for tickets on top of that? This is a ASUO decision i'm guessing. But if this does happen, lets hope the Athletic department will help the students!!

I would of never been able to afford tickets when I was in school, especially on a game by game basis. We have 4 home games in a row this season, that could be tough for some kids. Groceries or game tickets?!? With all the money down there there has to be some way to keep student tickets free.

Going to games and sitting on the student section was one of the most fun things about college life in Eugene.

I was in school in the early to mid 70's and recall paying something like $15.00 for a Yearly Student Athletic Pass, which allowed entry into the athletic events, at no additional charge.
I therefore attended ALL home FB and BB games.
I am not sure how much that $15.00 yearly charge would compute out to in todays dollars, but it seems that this might be a path to also consider...
THE WORST POSSIBLE SCENARIO WOULD BE TO ELIMINATE THE STUDENTS FROM THE SPORTING SCENE.
The students are the future. They ARE the University....This IS their school.....
The rest of us are long term or short term fans, past alumni, etc...KEEP ACCESSIBILITY TO THESE SPORTING EVENTS OPEN TO THE STUDENTS....
Does anyone have any idea as to whom these Senators actually are? Do any of them have any actual interest in sporting events? Or, are they students that may have an axe to grind with the Athletic Programs successes and notoriety. If this is the case, like anyone else, they should have their rights to their opinions, but surely should not have final say as to what occurs relating to the seating. If they do control what financial outlays the student union makes, maybe the destiny of the student seating needs to be addressed and controlled by some other body...
Our seating is in near proximity to the Student Sections and to be quite honest, speaking from the standpoint of an old fart, the games just wouldnt be the same without their full attendance...Just my 2 cents worth....

What do you mean? Is there a student athletic pass that sells for $370.00? Or, are you referencing the price of a season reserved FB ticket?
I spose that if one cant afford to buy the tickets, they probly shouldnt be doing so, but, students need to have a definate break in costs....My daughter is college age and I know for sure, she doesnt have excess cash to spend on athletic events, at the going reserved seat costs.....
