A real pg makes all the difference..
Both of Kent's most successful seasons were lead amazing PGs: Brooks and Ridnour. I think a talented PG to lead your team is huge in college basketball.
Random tidbit. In both our highest offensive outputs in Pac-10 play, Armstead had 11 and 13 assists respectively. Having a PG who can distribute the ball and also be a threat offensively does wonders for a program. Obviously it helps when you have players that can hit their shots as well, but if you look at most of the Pac-10 games we lose, our Ast-TO ratio is horrible (Look at our last 3 losses outside of the Arizona game).
I think once Altman starts getting his own classes and is able to pull in a PG who can lead this team, we'll be solid squad. Kinda just rambling, but this seems usually be the case in college basketball. Turnovers are deadly, strong PG play is crucial.

Really helps when you have a PG that can drive to the basket to get their own shot or dish out to the open man on the wing when the defense collapses. Armstead didn't have the explosiveness he had last season to drive consistently. It also helps if you have players who can knock down 3s consistently.UOducksTK1 wrote:Both of Kent's most successful seasons were lead amazing PGs: Brooks and Ridnour. I for one am looking forward to see what Barron can bring to the team. From all reports it sounds like he's a guy who gets his teammates involved and is more about the assist than being the scorer (so a true PG), plus when was the last time UO had a PG 6'4? If he has the quickness to drive into the lane and can also use his size advantage over smaller PG, he could be a pretty good pickup for us on both ends of the floor.

Preseason I really thought this team was going to turn the corner due to Armstead's emergence last year, but the combination of health issues and the lack of talent due to deflections prevented that.
I think the most frustrating thing about this season has been for me is that Loyd is really the only bright spot moving forward. The roster basically resets after next year.... The 2011 recruiting class can't get here soon enough.... although I hope everyone redshirts except Brown.

I doubt anybody can/will redshirt next year, since they'll still real short on depth in the front court, which rules out Kuemper redshirting, and the backcourt talent is still real shallow, even with Joseph coming in to fill Strowbridge's spot. Maybe Kingma or Barron could redshirt, but Altman seems to be counting on them already for next season.Boom wrote:Preseason I really thought this team was going to turn the corner due to Armstead's emergence last year, but the combination of health issues and the lack of talent due to deflections prevented that.

I understand that Barron & Kingma have more upside, but there still freshman.... were going to have 4 seniors plus Loyd & Brown at guard. Kuemper does fill a need though... especially with Catron leaving... Is that German kid going to be on the team next year? 6-10 and can't even get on the court!?

Redshirting is pretty rare in basketball as it is, and the only conceivable candidate to do next year would be Barron, as he could be behind Armstead and Loyd. If Kingma's shooting touch translates right away, no way he sits. This team needs shooters.

I think that Altman probably would have redshirted Seiferth since he clearly wasn't ready to play at the D1 level yet, but ended up playing him because he thought he would help provide some depth, which he didn't.oregontrack wrote:Redshirting is pretty rare in basketball as it is, and the only conceivable candidate to do next year would be Barron, as he could be behind Armstead and Loyd. Indeed. I remember Ernie kicking himself for not redshirting Chris Christopherson his freshman year, when he logged all of a 90 seconds in two or three meaningless OOC games. Would have liked to see Big Chris as a redshirt senior in '03, could have returned all but Jones from the Elite Eight team. And Big Chris was a hell of a lot better than Brian Helquist (remember Brian Helquist? Ugh).
