So what would the short or long-term benefits have been had Armstead stayed an extra season, since the underlying issue here is the "development of the team, both short and long-term."

Frankly, I don't see any real benefits for his staying. He didn't really want to be here this season and he clearly no longer wants to so his staying would have had a negative effect on the guys coming into the program. Also, why am I not surprised that the biggest EK supporter on here thinks that the loss of Armstead is a "huge blow" for next year? I think we're all going to again be pleasantly surprised by Altman when we discover that the players will actually improve in their fundamental skill sets over the off-season than what we've been accustomed too.

Really, losing an avg SR pg on a young team that has a crowded back-court is not some death blow to next year so lets stop acting like MA was the 2nd coming of Terrel Brandon

While it may look bad now, it could be a blessing in disguise. It will definitely now make Loyd and Barron the future of this team now, instead of later, which will help speed up their development. Altman doesn't want players who don't want to be here so was probably all the more willing to give Armstead his release. In nearly two years time, Altman will have almost completely turned over the roster to players better suited for his system, although a couple from Kent's team have stayed and fit in quite nicely. I'm excited at the where the program is headed, even if there will be some bumps in the road in the future.

The sooner we hand over the team to the incoming freshman the better...

IMO this is just another situation where you can't lose what you never had. Could Armstead have been one of our best players? Definitely, problem is he only showed up to about a 3rd of the games we played. And there was no sign that that was going to change. So we lost a talented SR that would have helped us win a few games next year but been a non factor in a lot of them. Not that concerned. A less talented, less experienced Loyd that gives 100% every game will be better than a talented, experienced Armstead that only decides to try every 3rd or 4th game.

People are trying to compare Lloyd and Armstead that Lloyd isn't the same
player. That's correct. Lloyd is a freshman. The kid is unafraid and tough.
Even tho i liked Armstead i don't think his head was really ever in it this
year. I know he battled injuries and played through it seemed as tho he
went through the motions sometimes. I think once Lloyd is a couple of years
older and has worked on his shooting then he will be one of the better pg in
the league. Has a tremendous upside.
Sim isn't the most talented kid out there but man he try's. He gave us great
effort this year as did everyone. I believe the basketball program is in great
hands and has a bright future. I'm not worried about pg and i do hope that
Malcolm does well wherever he lands. Wish him well.

I think lost in this thread is Devoe Joseph. Everyone seems to be projecting him strictly as a 2-guard, but from what I've heard he's definitely going to play a lot of combo minutes for us, and is quite capable of spelling Loyd. I'm not going to sit here and profess to know how Altman is going to break down everyone's minutes by position, nor am I saying Joseph is a prototypical D-1 point, but with A.) the guard spots as deep as they are, and B.) Joseph's ability to play at the next level dependent almost entirely on how well he can play the point, we will see him handling the ball.

Which really makes Armstead's departure a non issue, IMO.

We could do worse than the occasional Joseph/Brown/Singler/Nared/Jacob line-up.

^Very true...Its going to be a great off-season to see what develops because it should look like a completely different team and I'm excited to see how it unfolds!

Right...Losing the SR PG off a young team isn't a big deal at all...For the development of LLoyd and Barron this may be good, but also might be bad if it's throwing into the fire too soon....Lloyd will be okay i think, he's really tough and I love his football player mentality, but who knows about Barron...We struggled against presses with Malcolm out, hopefully someone can make up for that...I think we had a decent shot at an NCAA tourney bid for next year but with the loss of Malcolm that seems all but gone at this point...Hopefully Brown isn't a one and done and we don't waste his only year with PG's that are unable to distribute

Brown doesn't sound like one who's a one and done type of player as he really believes in what Altman is building and wants to help get Oregon to the NCAA Tournament. I would say he's probably at least a 3 year player at Oregon.

That is what has been lost in this discussion. Brown. He will likely replace one of MA's qualities we lost with him leaving, right away. That is breaking down players one on one, in half court. If he can pass well when double teamed, we could be fine with MA leaving. MA at times passed very well. Loyd had some assist, but they often came on fast breaks, which he could go to the hoop very well, but out of half court not nearly as well as MA. In fact I remember many turnovers with Loyd from bad passes. Maybe he gets better after his freshman year. MA at times made some great passes, we may miss that with his leaving. His defense was at times terrible yet he had a ton of steals. But was he gambling too much? Duh. But if he had a mixed bag of attitude this summer, that would not been good for the team of incoming freshman to be around. Especially since Altman emphasizes defense. We want the freshman working hard on defense. So maybe, net we will be better off and perhaps at least as good, if not better eventually, with his leaving. But I like what Malcom brought to this team at times, a lot. So I will miss him.

Don't underestimate Armstead's passing ability and defense. Probably two of his best quality's, up there with his ability to create when no one else can. It will hurt not to have a player who is constantly in the top 25 with SPG. I'm not too worried about the passing, I think Loyd can be a solid distributor. Unfortunately, the defense might not be there. Brown and Kingma are offensive oriented. Hopefully Barron can fill that void, but unlikely as a freshmen he'll be able to do that.
