Re: Mike Stoops fired?
Everyone knew this was coming. Kind of sucks for him. The school doesn't support the football program financially and the fans haven't been coming out to the games. Stoops is a real hothead on the field, but he comes off as being pretty intelligent and knowledgeable off the field. Was an outstanding DC at OU. Wouldn't be surprised if he goes back to Norman.
Arizona should hire Mike Leach. Would be awesome for the conference.

“If everybody in this room just want to be real with themselves, this game could have went either way,” he said. “We turned the ball over a lot. We beat ourself. Just be real with yourself right now. We beat ourself.”

They appointed the defensive coordinator as interim HC. With as poorly as the defense plays this year it seems like a strange move.

Kind of a perfect storm for him, close to bringing Az to relevance and a lot of injuries over this offseason really did him in. Wish him the best of luck at whatever FCS team picks him up.

The timing is a little odd. Here's Byrne's response to that question.....
Why now? Byrne: "We want them to have some fun playing football. We wanted our coaches to have fun coaching."

WTF? Players and coaches don't like being yelled at by a lunatic when they are losing? Who knew?

Not all that surprised by him getting fired. He's going to end up somewhere as a coordinator or HC so I'm not going to feel too sorry for him. As for replacing him with his DC, that's just as laughable.

Re: Mike Stoops fired?
I saw this coming. Actually, I called it right after the Ducks beat them. It may seem bad for him right now, but this may turn out to be a blessing in disguise. The guy has been under a lot of stress the past couple years, both personal (divorce) and professional (losing both coordinators in the same season).
If I were him I'd take 1-2 years off and then go be a D-coordinator for awhile until the right opportunity came along. It may take some time, but he'll get another chance somewhere.
I honestly wish him well.

He is going to make some school a very good defensive coordinator. I feel bad for the guy but he just wasn't cut out to be a head coach. As bad as the mildcats are right now, they were soooo much worse before he got there. Dark days are looming in Tuscon.

Not necessarily. As you said, things are better there now than they were before. Yes, they're going to lose several seniors, including Foles and Criner, but there's still talent there and Tucson is a much more desirable place than somewhere like Pullman. Sunshine most of the year, city of 500k with a lot to do, Phoenix is only less than a two hour drive away, etc. I've spent a lot of time down there and it's really nice, I think.karlhungis wrote:He is going to make some school a very good defensive coordinator. If they bring in a proven coach like, Leach, Bellotti, June Jones, etc, they could realistically be back in a Bowl game within a year or two.
Also, if they plan to invest in a proven coach they must also be aware that they'll need to start upgrading their facilities immediately, otherwise they won't keep him for long.
It'll be interesting to see how things turn out.

Re: Mike Stoops fired?
One more thing about Stoops - he seemed like a stand up guy. Never threw his players under the bus, never placed the blame on his assistant coaches, etc.
Despite being a hothead, he's the complete opposite of Slick Rick, who is a major d-bag.
