2011 Athlete Colt Lyerla

Colt Lyerla was a 6'4" 210 pound athlete in 10th grade, when this video was made. He is now preparing for his Junior season and is rumored to be 6'5" and 228 pounds.

"Who's that guy," asked one running back. Another replied, "I don't know but he is HUGE". As the events began and after a dynamic warm up by the Schuman's staff the story quickly unfolded. In the standing vertical jump a few competitors took reps and everyone was wowed by one young man who hit 34". Than Lyerla stepped up and you could sense the anticipation. But there was that mood and another athlete offered that "he is a big guy so don't expect to much". Lyerla took his first rep and was so far over the top of the sticks that they had to give him a redo after adjusting them. On his next rep Lyerla hit a 38.5" mark. "That is the highest vertical jump all year out of over 18,000 competitors," yelled an elated camp coach.

A roar went up over the crowd and the show was on. Rotating through the events Lyerla went on to take 3rd in the 40 with a solid 4.62, first in the Pro Agility shuttle with a 4.20, and he added 27 reps on the bench. But it was the broad jump that Lyerla impressed most with. The standing Broad Jump is perhaps one of the oldest drills we see at these events and yet one of the very best indicators of explosiveness. In order to succeed you must put several muscle groups into action at a split second.

So as Lyerla approached there was a sense that something big was about to happen. To hit 10 feet plus would be a major accomplishment and put him in the top group nationwide. So as Colt launched himself skyward and to a 10'7" distance the crowd and his competitors could only watch in sheer appreciation for what he had done. His second rep was even better. He hit a 10'10" mark. "Wow that was amazing," said the coach recording the scores. "Thanks," offered Lyerla running off for some water. Within about 3 minutes he was called back to the testing station by Camp Director Brad Vicarro.

"You have to go again. Colt you just broke the all time Schuman's record. You have to prove it" offered Vicarro "I need to see this". And so with little anticipation Lyerla came back and repped a 10'7", 10'10" and a 10'9" back to back. "It's a record," confirmed Vicarro. The camp went on and Lyerla proved why these physical traits are more than just for testing as he man handled his way to the camp MVP award.

Same HS as Erik Ainge. Kid is the very definition a physical FREAK. Plays RB and slot for his HS team. Doesn't show any interest in Tennessee. Yet.

BTW, according to OregonPreps.com, Oregon will be offering this kid ASAP, (Isn't Sept. 1st the day it's legal to recruit a HS junior?)

We need to get these good in-State and Northwest kids. He should be right at the top of our list for 2011.

This kids a must get for the 2011 class. Looking at his combine numbers along with his size just screams D1 talent. What kind of numbers has he put up in HS? With this kids size and athletesism I would hope he is putting up huge numbers. If not his coach is wasting a pure talent.

Remember, this kid was a sophomore... According to MaxPreps.com, over 9 games on OFFENSE, Lyerla rushed 37 times for 309 yards, (8.35 ypc and 34.3 ypg, with 2 TDs.

He also had 8 receptions, for 130 yards, (16.25 ypc) 14.4 ypg, and 1 TD.

He also kicked a field goal in an Oct 31 game against Liberty HS (Hillsboro, Oregon).

On special teams, Lyerla returned 8 punts, for 127 yards (15.88 ypr), 17 K/O, for 431 yards (25.35 ypr), including 2 games in which he averaged 40 and 49.5 yards.

On DEFENSE, Colt recorded 7 tackles...

Underused? Sure sounds like it...

As a freshman, Lyerla competed on his HS track team, posting times of 11.93 in the 100 meters, and 24.18 in the 200 meters, as well as high jumping 5'10", and long jumping 18'2.5"... Not bad for a 6'4" freshman with a DE/TE type build.

"Personally, I'd like to play LineBacker, Slot, or maybe even a safety... but it all depends on how fast and big I get."

The only school he mentions in the interview is Oregon, but he sounds open to others.

BTW, as a freshman, Lyerla attended the SchumanSpeed.com combine in Tualatin, Oregon:

http://www.schumanspeed.com/combine/per ... rtland.doc

"Lyerla earned the freshman MVP after making wowing the staff at the combine. The 6’1.5 189 lb Lyerla had a 33.5 inch vertical, ran a 4.45 shuttle and bench pressed 135 lbs 19 times. Lyera will be a great tight end if he continues to improve"

http://www.centuryfootball.info/news.asp?id=33

Other local first-team picks on offense went to Glencoe's Nick Marinello (tight end) and Kyle Hogan (running back), as well as Hilhi's Colt Lyerla (slotback) -- the lone sophomore chosen.

All that, and a 6'7" wingspan to boot... Plus he plays basketball!

Tony Gonzalez, anyone?

FWIW, he and White were on the same 7V7 team at the camp and seemed to be building quite a bond together.

Glad to see us pursuing Lyerla this early and offering.

In state talent should always be a high priority IMO.

We have offered him already? I hope we have but I heard someone say that there is a date that has to be reached before we can offer?

A "verbal" offer and written offer are very different. Written offer's can't be made to 2011 kids yet. I'm not sure if he has a verbal or not. I may be calling him through DT soon to do an article about him. Stay tuned.

There was a report on OregonPreps.com, a Rivals affiliate, that Lyerla would receive an offer of some kind in September, when rules allow that for 2011 prospects...

http://oregonpreps.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=955599

"It was an exciting day as OregonPreps continued our jaunt to camps and clinics with a stop at the Nike SPARQ event in Hillsboro, the Nike NFTC event and the Oregon Duck Football Camp. These three events brought some of the best athletes in the area together to compete in drills hoping to garner some attention.

One of those youngsters was Colt Lyerla of Hillsboro who we saw this past week at a Hillsboro High scrimmage. He looked amazing. Banged up a bit from the scrimmage Colt showed up to the Oregon Duck event today and impressed everyone big time. So much so that a source now confirms to OregonPreps that Lyerla will have a written offer to play for the Ducks after the September 1st, 2009 date in which schools can start official recruitment for Juniors."

Don't you just hate those "un-named sources"? That could be almost anybody.

I thought written offers can be made this September for 2011 recruits? Rivals mentioned Oregon verbally offered and said he'd have a written offer in the fall. Correct me if I'm wrong.
