Another Big Time CB is high on Oregon
http://www.oregon.rivals.com/content.asp?cid=961573
Oregon and MSU are on top right now, with Michigan and Miami following. Pay to read the rest.
I love that we are getting some love from some top CBs. Good news for our program. Chung and Byrd getting drafted high has definitely helped recruiting, because Mathis mentioned that in one of the reasons he likes Oregon.
Sounds like a smart kid that does his homework.

The comments by the Patriot staff that they considered the Duck D's complextion very suited in preparing CB's for the NFL was an interesting remark and one perhaps the recruiting staff should hold out as a tidbit to these kids...probably explains why both Byrd and Chung went as high as they did over the "experts" opinion

Re: Another Big Time CB is high on Oregon
This is another kid with some blazing speed... He was the Michigan state indoor champ at 60 meters (PR of 6.93).

Mathis qualified for the Michigan state 100-meter dash at the regional with a winning time of 10.71, a personal best at the time.
He bettered that at the Detroit Public School League meet May 21st, winning with a 10.62 (21.69 200 meters).
ESPN says his PR is closer to 10.4... That's pretty fast for a HS junior. The link also includes a couple video clips of Mathis in action. Mathis had 8 interceptions in 2008.

If you watch the youtube video, Mathis has a nice pass breakup at the goal-line, around the 5:45 mark. He also scored the winning TD, on a pitch from the QB.

"Right now my top 4 is Oregon, Michigan State, Michgan, and Miami in that order. Oregon is my number one school right now," said Mathis. Mathis currently holds a verbal offer from Oregon to play as a cornerback. "I have a verbal offer, they want me to play corner. I love Oregon, I can't wait to get out there and check it out in person. I have seen footage of the stadium, facilities, but I can't wait to see it in person."

Getting Mathis and Stephenson would be so awesome.
Maybe a bit of a stretch, but I like the sound of that already.

I think would be great to get both but also believe it is a stretch. This to go with the CB we got last season if he actually makes it to Oregon after grades and trouble with police would be great. I do not know how realisitic it is though. As we have seen in the past.. we have been in peoples favorites before and they have not pulled the trigger and they ended up going elsewhere. It would be nice to get these high caliber players to pull the trigger and see if any follow suit.

Re: Another Big Time CB is high on Oregon
I like that he plans on visiting, accompanied by both parents. His comment about Eugene was intriguing:
"I plan on visiting Oregon in August, early August, and my mom and dad will both be coming with me on the trip. I really want to see the city, the environment on my trip, I really want to make sure I feel like it is a place I could see myself living at after college."
Almost makes one wonder if the family is thinking about purchasing a house near campus when their son enrolls....

Re: Another Big Time CB is high on Oregon
His interest in Oregon is very genuine. I don't like that he won't announce until January, and he is in a position that is technically filled this year (which is CB, not safety, with Mitchell commitment). It sounds like the staff will take Mathis or Tyler Stephenson if they commit, but don't know if they will take both.
Mathis is a stud, needs to work on his tackling but otherwise very very solid. Nice kid, not real big on interviews, it was tough to get him on the phone.
I think he silents on his visit. My 2 cents.

IMO, it would be absolutely silly not to take both if they wanted to commit. We should have 1 scholie somewhere for a ESPN Top150 Watchlist guy, regardless of position. I'm no coach though so my opinion counts for not.

I would think they would take both. Make room for players of that caliber.

I have a feeling that once we get one or two of these guys to commit we will see others start to pour in... Call it the "Life Cereal" theory if you will... We told Greg Watson that he no longer has an offer, because we already got a DB.
Doubt we take both Stephenson and Mathis.

Those guys aren't Mathis or Stephenson though. Maybe we told them that because we are confident that a commit or two are imminent.
