Although awesome, Scout sucks. Now if Rivals and ESPN follow suit, I'll be impressed (not that 4 stars isn't impressive).

Re: Curtis White now a 5 star on scout
so does Rivals or ESPN suck if they keep Curtis as a 4 star?
i love people complaining about stars. you actually think player #10 at the wr in the country is that much different that #20? god i hope not.
and don't forget that when Mitch Mustain was a 5 star, it meant a great career as a back up qb at USC was in his future!!!! don't ever forget that. thanks!

IMO, Mustain's fate is his own doing (Attitude and ego play into his decision making processes too much for his own good.))... Had he attended a school that fit his skill set initially, or transferred to a place such as Oregon (Any school that runs a version of the spread), rather than USC, he would likely have had better luck.

We are lucky to have Curtis.
We all know star ratings aren't worth the computer space they occupy.
From now on I look at a player's evaluation like this:
If my coaches are confident enough to offer, then I'm happy. They have proved over and over again they are great evaluators of talent. Sometimes they miss, everyone does, but they deserve a lot of credit.

Your right Jhop, star ratings don't mean much until they come and produce. But its still fun speculating and star ratings do give a generally idea of what a recruit could become.

There are always exceptions to the rule, but Star ratings do matter in terms of winning championships the teams that win them always(usually) have top 5 classes.

Statistically, 4/5 stars work out more frequently than do 1/2/3 stars. So while there are certainly diamonds in the rough, I'd take a 5 star over a 3 star any day of the week.

Sorry Jhop but thats a really bad example. TJ ward had a blown knee coming into the program. He had no offers from anyone. Had he been healthy as a senior, he was a 3*-4* talent. If you were to talk to TJ he would not tell you he was 1* player who blossomed. He would tell you he was a 4* player coming out of High School (who had a blown knee)...jhopduck wrote:

Stewart Mandel-"From a purely aesthetic standpoint, I much prefer to watch a good spread-rushing offense over a traditional Power-I offense, and Oregon's has been the most fun by far for the past several years. It's fast, its precise, and when Chip Kelly has the right quarterback (Dixon, Masoli) at the helm, the possibility of someone ripping off a 60-yard run exists on nearly every play."

Re: Curtis White now a 5 star on scout
The best way to evaluate I think is to see how many top notch schools offer a kid, not how many stars a kid has. Petey Carrol and Urban Meyer don't look at the stars and say he a five star so we've got to get him. Usc just got a commit from a 2 star player. If they didn't think he was a very good player they wouldn't have offered.
There are some sleepers out there that get over looked. I remember years ago that Oregon would be very secretive about who they were recruiting so as to not let other teams know about certain kids. It's changed now basically with the internet providing so much info but, in general if Florida , Usc and Texas offer you know the kid is usually pretty good .

Stars probably do factor in to some degree whether or not other top recruits commit to a program. "That 5 star went there, so I should too."
