Top 5 1998 Shooting Guards
Kobe Bryant B+ B- C C+ C A
When Bryant announced he was going to not declare, nor attend highschool, but go to play for AC Milan and play for his father (an assistant coach there) there was much vexation among NBA GMs. The last two years have proven this to be very good for his career. Even being so young he dominated the competition in europe and was named the FIBA rookie of the year and in his second season finished runner up in the Europe MVP. He was even able to get six starts for the Football club in early cup competition. Like his basketball career he was an assassin in front of goal, scoring one hat trick and seven total goals (no assists and even fewer passes). Kobe bay never the greatest defender, but he has very quick hands and very light on his feet. He possess a lethal step-back and his form is smooth. Not since Drazen has this league seen such a pure outside scorer. One runs out of superlatives for what he brings to the court.
Emanuel Ginobili C+ C+ C+ C+ C- A
Kind of an unknown coming out of the Argentine club Estudiantes de Bahía Blanca. He had a very effective way, if unusual of getting to the hoop. It has been called the "euro-step" but "Manu" has seemed to perfect it. Scouts don't quite know what to make of it. He is a pretty good outside shot but what he does exceptionally well, especially for a guard/forward, is to pass the ball exceptionally very well. Scouts are torn as they are not sure if he will translate, but will admit that if this strange "euro-step" transitions he has all the tools have a very long career.
Corey Benjamin C B- C- C C A
Very talented outside gunner out of Oregon State. Despite playing for a very weak beaver side, he willed them to an at-large berth in the NCAA tourney. Despite losing to the like of UCLA or Arizona, Benjamin was visibly equal to anyone on the court, he just had a worse team around him. Scouts love his outside stroke and has a deceptively good inside game. Decent, but not outstanding on defense, many scouts wonder if he is too comfortable being the best player on poor teams.
Larry Hughes B- C C- B+ C A
Mid major phenom out of the very strong mid-table conference the Atlantic-10. Hughes was a nighmare in the combo-guard role for the Billikens this year, easily guiding them to a conference championship and a sweet-sixteen finish. He played a ton of both point guard (PG Eligible) and at shooting guard wherever the situation seemed advantageous. Excellent post player and surprisingly good post defender from the guard position. He has outstanding size and quickness and is easily the most day 1 ready player in this class. If he can put together the same level of performances he did in college he could be a star, but even if he takes a step back with the better competition, he is great as it.
Ricky Davis B- C+ C- C+ C A
A rare one and done player out of big-10 power Iowa. Many scout think he may have been better served staying in college but did get his fair share of steals with excellent defense at the combine.
