STUPID QUESTIONS FROM THE NEW GUY

I'm a long time Duck fan and huge college football fan, but to be honest, I don't understand the recruiting process
very well. Just wondering, if the scholarship limit is 85, and hypothetically, we're looking for 21 or 22 recruits:

1) How many offers can we make?
2) what if we have few commits, but lots of maybe's on signing day?
3) What if only 15 commit and we have seven scholarships still open?
4) How about 25 or 27? If several unlikely's commit, can a letter of intent be denied?
5) What exactly does "overbooking" mean and how does that play out?
6) How does a recruit process being recruited, but no scholarship offered?
7) Would'nt that leave the supposed recruit out in the cold if school X fails
to offer and schools A, B and C fill their scholarships with others?

Hoping for some education (preferably free of sarcasm and insult) I'm just trying to understand the rules to the game.

The total scholly limit is 85 but due to kids who get in trouble and get kicked, kids who leave for their own reasons, accidents like Todd Doxey and kids who go pro early we recruit close to the 25 usually. In a perfect world where every kid got a chance to Redshirt and was at the program for 5 years we would only take about 17 each year but it's not a perfect world.

2)Then we are in for lots of suspense. The coaches usually get a pretty good idea from the kids but don't let it out if the kid wants to announce on signing day. There are surprises but the coaches usually have a decent idea of who's coming.

3)Signing day is simply the first day of the signing period. Kids can sign LOI's until April 15 I think. Maybe it's March 15? Anyway we will offer to other kids to fill needs if we don't get all the commits we expect on LOI day.

4)It can but rather than that they will offer a grayshirt to some guys that will basically be an offer to enroll the following spring and count toward the next class rather than enroll in fall. Also some kids are able to be counted toward last year's class if they are able to enroll early. I know some JC's fall into this category but not all. I'm not sure if EE HS kids can do this or not.

5)Overbooking just means that you take commits from more guys than you have room for and do the above if they all qualify. The scholarship limit is like the salary cap in football. There are lots of ways to squeeze kids in by counting them toward the next or previous year. The coaches are usually very up front with the kids that might be asked to grayshirt.

6)It's pretty common for kids to get recruited by programs that haven't offered. It usually happens to kids that aren't really on the level of the program that's recruiting them and the school kinda keeps them stringing along until higher rated guys at the position either commit or go elsewhere. It's a tough balancing act because those kids will usually have offers from lower tier schools and you don't want them to go there before you find out if you're going to need them or not.

7)Possibly but schools A, B and C usually have kids that they're doing the same with and waiting to see if they get the kid before offering the kids that they're recruiting without offers. Most schools fill their needs and then keep a few spots open for big recruits that they may or may not get. Sometimes the kids end up out in the cold but I don't think it's too common. If they're good somebody can make room for them.

By no means am I an expert. I'm just passing along what I've picked up following recruiting for the past couple years. Others can feel free to add or correct any mistakes I may have in my opinions.

Another thing to add: Usually we end up with and extra scholly or two due to misses. We then give these schollies to returning walk-on's who have good grades and are going to graduate. This helps our graduation rate and helps keep us from getting in trouble with the NCAA for a low graduation rate.

Yes, Welcome. I want to be the first to warn you that if your not careful you will become addicted very fast. There is no cure for your addiction and it's a life long sickness. Good Luck!

On # 3 if we do not use all the available schollies, Coaches may give a 1 year to a walk on or save it for the next year. An example of using a saved schollie is J.M. coming in from JC past the signing date.
