That makes it all the more important that Oregon get total buy-in from in-state kids to me. I don't want to hijack this whole thread, it just seems like 4* and 5* kids favor leaving (Molden, Marlon, Scarletts, Odighizuwa, and many many others) the state more than staying, and that doesn't help when you're already challenged by geography. Even the recruits who wound up at UO (Lyerla, Tyner) came dangerously close to leaving.DuckedOut wrote: Yeah, because Louisiana is littered with 4 star recruits. LSU can probably walk to the nearest high school and find SEC level athletes, we don't have that luxury. We're lucky if Portland has a handful of D1 caliber players, and this cycle...the top two players are going to Washington and everyone else is kinda average at best. Next cycle will be different however.

Taggart just offered that Pili kid. DT with offer from USC.QB11 wrote:Taking kids from Oregon just to "build a wall" is part of how we got here. I believe there is only one current commit from the state for this class now? Considering there was a fair amount of talent for this year for the state, that's pathetic. The PK's did the right thing by pulling the trigger now before things got even worse. Seems like a good kid though so good luck to him wherever he goes.

It's like that everywhere. Some kids want to get out and see something else. Some kids want a 4 star education.StevensTechU wrote:That makes it all the more important that Oregon get total buy-in from in-state kids to me. The difference is that Oregon inconsistently produces 4/5 star kids. We got Lyerla and Tyner. Molden and Marlon were recruited by the Helfrich Trainwreck Crew, can't blame them for gravitating away from a disaster of a program headed toward rock bottom. Some kids are gonna stay in state, some aren't.
The Beavs have gotten a couple of those types of Oregon guys too.

I beg to differ, but I also don't have the time to put together a comparison. However, I'd wager real dollars that the state of Oregon sends a higher proportion of its 4* and 5* to programs out-of-state than states like Georgia, Louisiana, California, or even Washington. I truly believe there's a culture of 'If you're a big time recruit, you leave Oregon."Duckenstein wrote: It's like that everywhere. Some kids want to get out and see something else. I don't believe that at all. Especially not before this year.

Re: Ducks lose a recruit?
Maybe this is just my perception but it seems like a lot of the 4-5* recruits the state produces weren't actually born and raised here. If many of them are transplants then they obviously won't have Oregon roots or connection to the state.

Proportion of Oregon's 4*/5* (247 Composite) players who elected to go to OSU or UO.
2017: 0/2
2016: 2/2

2014: 0/3
2013: 2/3
2012: 2/2

8/18 (44%) stayed home during a period where Oregon was amazing, OSU was Ok, washington and USC were mostly terrible.
Proportion of Washington's 4*/5* players who elected to go to uw or WSU.

Re: Ducks lose a recruit?
I went ahead and counted all of the composite 4 star and 5 star athletes that Oregon has produced over the past 10 years and where they ended up signing. There were 20 in total, which is not a good number to average out over a decade.StevensTechU wrote:I beg to differ, but I also don't have the time to put together a comparison. 11 of those recruits signed at other schools (none of them in Georgia or Louisiana like you said) and 9 signed with Oregon. The number of high level recruits Oregon signed in state would have to be a lot lower to be considered a "culture" of big time recruits leaving the state.
If there's a in state school that has problems with getting top instate talent, it's Oregon State. They only signed one 4/5 recruit and that was Seumalo...and we all know why he ended up in Corvallis.

IMO that's a mistake I saw him play live and was super underwhelmed with his athleticism and motor.Duckenstein wrote:Taggart just offered that Pili kid. It's weird because Joe S. didn't offer him at Wazzu according to 247's database.

I neither agree nor disagree with what you're saying, but a list of player names and where they eventually went would be helpful to go along with this analysis, to understand the context. For example, kids from Jesuit picking a college that is highly ranked academically instead of Oregon should not be a knock on the Ducks. Or a kid moving here in high school going elsewhere should not either.StevensTechU wrote:Proportion of Oregon's 4*/5* (247 Composite) players who elected to go to OSU or UO.

If I've counted correctly, three schools have signed 2 4/5 star recruits from Oregon since 2010.pdxduck2013 wrote:I neither agree nor disagree with what you're saying, but a list of player names and where they eventually went would be helpful to go along with this analysis, to understand the context. Stanford: Cam Scarlett, Joey Alfieri
Cal: Brendan Scarlett, Gabe King
Washington: Molden, Tuipulotu
BYU, ASU, and UCLA all got 1. To me, that doesn't sound like outside schools are just raiding Oregon like crazy to get high level recruits. A couple of those guys Oregon didn't even get involved with until it was too late.

Didn't we also pass on Cam Scarlett and Gabe King?
Not sure if we offered the one who went to BYU or ASU.

Re: Ducks lose a recruit?
Agreed that it would be helpful. However, that's a lot of time poured in, because if you're going to do that with the Oregonians then you need to do it for the Washingtonians and Oklahomans, too, for proper context. To me, I don't think it's a reach to say that Oregon's in-state recruiting practices (slow playing, passing on kids, etc.) probably aren't all that different than the places being compared to. It's an assumption, though.pdxduck2013 wrote: I neither agree nor disagree with what you're saying, but a list of player names and where they eventually went would be helpful to go along with this analysis, to understand the context.
