The difference in Willie's and Helf's recruits?
It may be way to early for a complete answer, but I see Willie making offers to kids Helf passed on and letting kids Helf recruited slip. Albeit Willie is throwing offers out like it was rice at a wedding, which I'm happy with but to me it seems like he's is targeting a different type of kid/player. Willie is hard nosed about team rules and classes which is great. I doubt he's a "we'll win at any cost" which means thugs brought in. But to me there seems to be a big difference in recruits between the two.
Please don't turn this into a bash on Helf thread...he's gone and unemployed.

I think part of it is the timing.
There's three weeks left to do 15 spots.
Tag needs to make sure those spots get filled, but still get talent.
Maybe we end up with some lower rates guys Helf didn't want. C'est le vie

Re: The difference in Willie's and Helf's recruits?
My feeling was the previous staff had gotten complacent, and felt that having gone to two NC games gave them juice that made an Oregon offer "special", and therefore offered sparingly thinking they'd close kids just by recent reputation. They slow played a lot of kids that wanted the Oregon offer for players that maybe had more stars. But by the time the higher rated kids had committed to other teams, the kids that did want to go to Oregon felt slighted and went elsewhere. The restriction on official visits hurt a lot too. Getting kids to visit is half the battle, and they had to be very selective due to the sanctions.
As for WT, at least this year he knows time is short so he's being ultra aggressive, throwing out a ton of offers. But I think in general he's just more of a "first come, first served" kind of guy. If you like Oregon you had better commit because there are multiple offers out to guys at your position.

I think Coach T has already explained what the difference will be between his recruiting and the previous regime's. He wants tough guys who are hard workers. With all the different criteria that Helfrich and Co. had for recruits, I'm not sure "tough" was one -- hard worker maybe.

I loved that every player Helf recruited during his regime made it into school! It seemed like many of them were their team captains at their high schools too. That is why the vacuum of leadership on the team last season boggles my mind. Too many generals and not enough foot soldiers to get in the trenches, and do the fighting?Alan wrote:It may be way to early for a complete answer, but I see Willie making offers to kids Helf passed on and letting kids Helf recruited slip. I was talking to an OSU fan at work before the start of last season discussing the defensive woes of the Ducks. I wondered if taking all these well spoken smart kids, with no issues (like the ones Zac Clark alluded to on the other thread) were hurting our defense? It seems like a lot of great defensive players have a mean streak, nasty, almost criminal kind of mentality. Maybe our D was too nice?

I think it's more that helfs 12 step process eliminated a lot of good kids that played hard and didn't do anything to promote leadership on the team. There were a lot of me first guysduckduckgoose wrote:I loved that every player Helf recruited during his regime made it into school! I completely agree with this. Taggart is going to be much more aggressive in his recruiting. And he has a staff that will relate much better to kids.pdxduck wrote:My feeling was the previous staff had gotten complacent, and felt that having gone to two NC games gave them juice that made an Oregon offer "special", and therefore offered sparingly thinking they'd close kids just by recent reputation. I expect Taggart and Co. To consistently recruit classes in the 10-15 range. And I expect next year's class to be pushing top 10 because of the in state talent that is available.

Complacency is a great word to describe Helf, specifically in recruiting. I do think WT is more lenient on who he offers, so I'd imagine we will see some guys not qualify every class (something we didn't have to really worry about under Helf).pdxduck wrote:My feeling was the previous staff had gotten complacent, and felt that having gone to two NC games gave them juice that made an Oregon offer "special", and therefore offered sparingly thinking they'd close kids just by recent reputation. I think he shotgunned offers out this class because he was behind and needed to make up a lot of ground. From the way they're going about recruiting the 2018 class, they're going to be able to be a bit more selective in who they offer.UOducksTK1 wrote:Complacency is a great word to describe Helf, specifically in recruiting. Doesn't hurt that this is the largest class we have taken in a while as well.

Re: The difference in Willie's and Helf's recruits?
Helfrich's recruits were good students (as people pointed out, every one was admitted to UofO), had squeaky clean backgrounds, came from good homes/good areas. He put himself in a position where Oregon was recruiting against Stanford on pretty regular basis. One thing that stood out to me was how Helf essentially shut down recruitment to the Fresno area where Oregon was really popular when he took the helm. (Only exception I'm aware of is Bryson Young)
I imagine that Willie's going to spend less thought/time on researching players' backgrounds, offer kids on the fringe of acceptance, and not shy away from kids who come from rough areas. It's going to open up the talent pool pretty immensely, and require more 'parenting' once they're at the school, which is something it appears he's ready to take on.
