Re: Is Helfrich watching this staff?
Ermmm... just like how recruiting rankings can rank us lower than we should be (may have happened during Chip era), I think it's completely possible that the recruiting rankings sometimes had us ahead of where we should actually be. We have taken relatively full classes under Helf. I am not exactly sure how to evaluate our current roster, but the claims by some that our roster is depleted of talent would contradict the idea that Helf was an ok recruiter....

The guy just got fired, and left a recruiting class half done and did or did not develop players that will play for Tag.
Tag's efforts happen in the context of marks legacy.

Ideally Helfrich watches what's happening right now, understands almost immediately where he fell short (people skills, in a phrase), and spends the next five years addressing those so he can return when Taggart moves on and run the program until retirement like he should have been able to the first time around.

He's no longer employed by Oregon. Shouldn't be in here. My opinion. Should be about Oregon recruiting.

Re: Is Helfrich watching this staff?
Helfrich back in 5 years...that would do a complete melt down of this board..He wont be back.
And Chip isnt coming back either. We just need to move forward now. Helfrich is an Oregon guy
and loved this school. Didnt work out regardless if right or wrong. Its a new day at Oregon now.
We need to put the past in the rear view mirror. Saves arguments that way

Right, but he didn't and wasn't going to. So the better recruiter is the guy who got Devon Allen, not the one who was gonna let him to go another school.buckmarkduck wrote: Allen was a complete gimmie. He would have committed at anytime if Kelly would have just offered.

Re: Is Helfrich watching this staff?
It'd be a complete meltdown because no one would trust that he fixed the problems that needed to be fixed, but if he did, then we'd be idiots not to want him back. He's incredibly smart, and incredibly smart people get wins if they know how to coach properly. Just because he wasn't ready the first time around doesn't mean he couldn't be the second.duckfan22 wrote:Helfrich back in 5 years...that would do a complete melt down of this board..He wont be back.

Re: Is Helfrich watching this staff?
Helfrich is a smart guy and a really good guy. He loves this school. But can he change his personallty ?
He lost the locker room and did not have his whole team buying into him. He is however a really good
offensive cordinator. It takes a really strong leader to get 120 or so 18-24 year olds to all buy into the team.
I really hoped he would have made it here. I just think its time to move on. I also dont see the current leadership
in the ath dept. bringing him back. I doubt they will even entertain Chip again.

This was in no way meant to be a "Helfrich Bashing Thread". Everyone needs to learn things from their experiences whether you are 12 or 82. I was just curious if Helfrich would (a) watch what the new staff is doing, and (b) change his philosophy based on what the new staff is doing in terms of creating excitement, energy, and momentum.duckfan96 wrote:Shouldn't this be in the other guys forum? Just a simple question.
If someone took a job I had held and kind of failed, and was doing it in a much different way, I would probably want to know what they were doing. Would I directly mimic them, maybe not, but I could probably learn something.

Re: Is Helfrich watching this staff?
Outward personality is changeable, yes. A weak leader can usually become a strong leader if he learns how to do it. I'm sure a competent psychologist and some practice coaching in a less scrutinized environment could result in improvements if he is willing to put in the effort.
This is exactly how I interpreted the question.EncinitasDuck wrote:This was in no way meant to be a "Helfrich Bashing Thread". I agree that leaders can be made. It might not come natural to them, but as long as the people that are following buy-in then that's all that matters.

They always say "fake it until you make it," and that's exactly what applies here.Phenom wrote:I agree that leaders can be made. It might not come natural to them, but as long as the people that are following buy-in then that's all that matters.

Re: Is Helfrich watching this staff?
Helf is a smart guy, if anyone could learn by observing the new staff I think it's him. Granted he was sitting there with Chip every day and none of Chips leadership abilities seemed to sink in, so there's that.Phenom wrote:I agree that leaders can be made.
