I agree we don't have stars on our team except Dye. But is it really a stretch to say our D will jump twenty spots nationally with essentially the same personnel, but with a new coaching staff? My point being is our new staff will put the players in better position to succeed than our old staff. I think twenty spots is real improvement.

Sure enough. 20 spots seems about right.

I would expect some improvement based on getting a year older alone.

Think about it like this...

The playoff teams this year the lowest ranked defense was Washington at 16. They were good against Alabama. PAC top teams were Colorado at 24 and USC at 27. In order for us to have a shot at the PAC championship and to be competitive in the playoff we need to get well inside the top 30. Even with these coaches, this roster can't get there in the next two years. We improve 20 spots next year, we'll still be the 106th ranked defense. We improve 40 spots 86th. We need to improve 100 spots to get to 26th, and that's still probably not good enough to win a playoff.

The game is very different even to just a few years ago when our crazy offense could contend with a defense in the 30's. We won't be legit until we replace a ton of players with better talent.

I know some of you are simply saying we can be a lot better under these new coaches. No argument. But we're miles away. Talent is the major obstacle.

I am calling my shot. We will have a middle of the pack defense next year.

Springs looked like an NFL prospect early in the year. Then he fell off big-time.

I just glanced at the last two recruiting classes, of the 20+ recruits listed for defense I think only 5 held offers from Colorado. Is it fair to say Jim Leavitt evaluates recruits differently than the last staff?

It's funny how polarizing a player Schooler is. Some folks think he's a star. Others think he was simply the best option.

I'm still torn. If I had to guess, Schooler won't be starting at safety at the beginning of the 2018 season. But who knows?

That would be around 65. Not out of the question. I'm thinking more like 80 as a measure of success. But maybe our old coaches were just so bad that over 2 years we were awful even with good players. Hard to quantify how many spots coaches can improve a team.

A middle of the pac D with a spectacular O could lead to a lot of wins

I encourage everybody to go back and look at our defensive commitments in the last 3-4 cycles. It's a graveyard. Our only hope is we get a couple contributors from our 2015 class to blossom under the new coaches and that every defensive player in the 2016 class comes strong. Even if all that happens, we're still many players short of what's needed.

I'll quit harping on this now. I'm just totally amazed at how badly our old coaches recruited defense. And I think all fans need to be patient.

I certainly wouldn't disagree with your guess! I do like his tenacity on the field and think if he comes in as 2nd string would be a great shot in the arm, especially with his experience from last year.
