Current Commits, Positions & Targets
I thought we could start a new thread as we head toward signing day for discussion on where current commits fit on the roster, remaining targets at positions of need, and speculation on how Taggart & Co. proceed with '17 and '18 targets.

Re: Current Commits, Positions & Targets
At WR, Taggart seems to be offering many targets in the '18 class already.
We've always had several long guys at the position and we need to load up there to replace Stanford, Wallace, and, after this year Carrington. Currently have Ofodile.
Current commits Felix and McNeal, if they end up in the slot, provide depth, and targets Judson and Burch would bolster it.
However, still missing a speed threat on the outside (eg Devon Allen) and rangy pass catchers in the mold of Carrington.

Re: Current Commits, Positions & Targets
Total: 29 but only 25 count against 2017, 4 are early enrollees (I believe that all of these count against previous year).
By my count, we currently have 62 on Scholarship 62. If we add this many I'm not sure how we'll stay under the 85 limit. However, I though Jihree Stewart was bailing and they still show him on scholarship.
Can anyone share how this would be possible?

Not bad but you missed Gibson, Burch, and Thompson.

I wouldn't be surprised if Lenoir played Safety to make room for other corners

I was thinking that as well but he's the best cover guy on the west coast. Not sure you give that up.scoducks wrote:I wouldn't be surprised if Lenoir played Safety to make room for other corners

Yeah, I'd be surprised to see Lenoir move to safety in his first season, maybe he'll do that down the road if we can build up some talent at CB, but he's too damn good and we're just not good enough at CB for him to switch positions.Phenom wrote:I was thinking that as well but he's the best cover guy on the west coast. Re: Current Commits, Positions & Targets
They won't move him to safety. At least for now. If we fail to land anything resembling a real safety this year and there's injuries than maybe. However we get Speed on board or Blades I just don't see it. We'll need all 3 for the nickle and depth. I'm guessing that they'll move Malik Lovette to receiver once these guys are in the fold. He was an offensive machine and could really be utilized for Willie's Jet Sweep.DuckedOut wrote:Yeah, I'd be surprised to see Lenoir move to safety in his first season, maybe he'll do that down the road if we can build up some talent at CB, but he's too damn good and we're just not good enough at CB for him to switch positions.Phenom wrote:I was thinking that as well but he's the best cover guy on the west coast. Re: Current Commits, Positions & Targets
We have somewhat of an idea of what we have and will get for 2017. I've been taking a look at 2018.
When I started writing this I was going to give a brief run down of 20 realistic and desirable prospects for 2018, but I'm a bit busy and it's taking forever so I'll try to break it down in a series or something. Below are the Oregon-level prospects in-state. I have a bunch more from all over the country that I know have interest in Oregon, some of it very serious, and I'll try to relay some of that eventually. For now here's my brief breakdown of 2018 in-state guys.
2018 is looking like the deepest class of Oregon recruits in recent memory, if not the best. It's missing a top 5-star along the lines of Tyner or Owa but there are solid top 300 level recruits. I'll list them in order of their 247 composite ranking.
Dawson Jaramillo: #140 overall, Lake Oswego. Started out in the way too early 2018 rankings as a five-star type of offensive tackle. Our own local Foster Sarrel type. Has fallen a bit in the rankings, but apparently he has all the tools. The summer camps, like The Opening, can bump his rankings up. Just as importantly he is a lifelong Ducks fan. I think he's the second biggest lock in this class and as it stands might be our highest ranked offensive line recruit ever.
Talanoa Hufanga: #170 overall, Crescent Valley (Corvallis). Looks like he could be an All Pac-12 safety at some point in his career. I've seen Nemec tout him as a potential 5-star, not sure on that yet but he's definitely athletic and a great football player. His brother played for OSU, and he's obviously from Corvallis. Sounds like Leavitt is making this kid a priority, and I hope they can close because we don't get too many recruits like this in the state of Oregon.
Braden Lenzy: #183 overall, Tigard. Apparently he grew up a Ducks fan, and he has speed to burn. Lenzy has been on the national radar for a while and it wouldn't shock me to see him wind up as the state's top prospect by this time next year. He also runs track, the 400M if I'm not mistaken. Would be a great addition to the class, as either a DB or WR.
Chase Cota: #213 overall, South Medford. We have our other Ducks lock to go with Jaramillo. He had a great relationship with Helfrich and company, and we've seen the progeny of Oregon legends wind up in other places to the North on I-5. But Cota is going to be a Duck. I was afraid the new staff would neglect him, thinking that he's committing no matter what. Yet one of their first stops after the dead period was to see him. Smart, and if we're being honest not what Helfrich would have done. It looks like his cousin Brady Breeze is adjusting well to the new staff. We have our big receiver for 2018, 6'3" kid. I would love to see him commit no later than The Opening and help build this class.
Trey Lowe: #239 overall, Jesuit. Listed as an athlete, and the top one in the country by 247, Keanon's younger brother is a much more esteemed recruit. He is electric on tape, a more dynamic force than Keanon was and I loved Keanon's game. I remember the elder Lowe was not happy with the Helfrich firing, but it seems that Keanon is still all Duck. Even with the taking of all these smaller athletes in 2017 you still need to pursue Trey. Looking forward to seeing him on the field in 2017, might have to catch the Holy War this year. He's 42nd overall in 247's own rankings, 10 spots outside of a 5-star.
Eli'jah Winston: #261 overall, Central Catholic. La'Mar's younger brother is a fine prospect in his own right. I've seen him play in person and you could tell that he's a great athlete, not sure what position he plays in college. LB seems likely, but maybe he's a big bodied WR. No idea on whether he wants to follow La'Mar to Eugene but you have to like the Ducks chances and think they will pursue vigorously.
Travis Spreen: #445 overall, Jesuit. One of the nation's top centers. Offensive lineman, outside of freaks of nature, are so difficult to judge. It seemed to be a point of pride for Greatwood to convert Gs and Ts to center, no idea if Cristobal has the same mentality. I would think Spreen is another high priority target.
Malakai Salu: #867 overall, Central Catholic. I don't know if he has the athleticism to be a high level prospect, but this stout LB was Central's best player in 2016. It seemed like he was getting 20+ tackles a game, the tough battling at the line type of tackles. In West Linn's demolition in the state championship game he made what seemed like half of CC's tackles. I would avoid watching Elijah Molden (and he was fun to watch) to zero in on Salu. May be a case of great football player, not athletic enough. I sure hope the Oregon coaches take a close look and evaluate him.

Great breakdown! Not sure if we offer all of them (or should) but the talent has definitely improved.

Sounds like Ellis Brooks is a real possibility, maybe with OL Mekhi Becton
We definitely need help at LB, and I'm hoping we land a 4* type to go with Slade Matautia and Niu

Re: Current Commits, Positions & Targets
I'd echo that I'm not sure that Salu has the athleticism to play at the pac-12 level. I'd visit Spreen in the late spring and see how he looks physically, as my one hesitation is whether he'll ever be a strong, healthy 300lber. As for the rest, I'd take every single one, with Cota and Lenzy being at the top of the list.GoDucksTroll wrote:We have somewhat of an idea of what we have and will get for 2017. 2018 looks good in San Diego, Fresno, and NorCal, which are typically strongholds for Oregon.
