The Class of 2013 in Review

Post by Duckenstein »

The 2017 recruiting class is in. But we'll have to wait years to properly evaluate them. There are a lot of reasons to be excited for the future when we look at the this class, and fewer reasons to harbor some disappointment.

Lenoir is a future NFL CB on paper, and others might appear to have a long road ahead to contributing on the field, but we won't know until they suit up and play.

Let's take a break from the 2017 class for a moment, and look back on the class of 2013.

As they enter their final year, these players have shown their mettle. Let's see how they stack up in hindsight.

Class of 2013
247 National Ranking: 19
247 Pac 12 Ranking: 4

Oregonian Headline Quote: "This is the best recruiting class they have ever had"

Players:

OL Cameron Hunt
*3 Year Starter

RB Kani Benoit
*Role Player

QB Damion Hobbs
*Transferred

DB Juwaan Williams
*Role Player

DL Elijah George
*Benchwarmer

WR Devon Allen
*Retired/Former Starter

LB Danny Mattingly
*Benchwarmer/Switched to TE

OL Jake Pisarcik
*Role Player

LB Joe Walker
*Former Starter/Grauduated

RB Thomas Tyner
*Former Starter/Retired

LB Tyrell Robinson
*Transferred

DB Tyree Robinson
*Role Player

OL Doug Brenner
*Benchwarmer

LB Torrodney Prevot
*Former Role Player/Dismissed

K Matt Wogan
*Starter

DB Chris Seisay
*Former Role Player/Transferred

WR Darren Carrington
*Starter

TE John Mundt
*Former Role Player/Graduated

OL Evan Voeller
*Role Player

This class heads into its final year with only 11 players remaining on the team after transfers, dismissals, retirements and graduations.

Of the players that have moved on, only LB Joe Walker, WR Devon Allen and RB Thomas Tyner could have been said to be difference-makers.

Despite potential, many players left the team due to behavioral problems or injuries.

Only WR Darren Carrington and OL Cameron Hunt could be said to be major contributors to the team. Both have been integral to Oregon's success in prior seasons, starting since their freshmen years.

Verdict:
This class looked great on paper. #19 overall and #4 in the conference. However, with only two significant contributors, only one veritable NFL prospect, and a handful of role players, this class turned out to be a bust.

I'd give them a grade of C-

Tyree was 4th in tackles this season, 4th the year before, and 12th as a freshman. I think we all want to see him reach his full potential, but dude has contributed a lot.

Would be interesting to see you do 2014, 2015, 2016 as well. I don't know what a normal success to failure ratio looks like at most "top 20" recruiting schools. Feels like Oregon has way too many misses, but I have no idea if there's any statistical analysis to back that up.

Don't we honestly have to give this class a D at best? I mean when Carrington and Hunt are your biggest pluses for an entire class...that's not good. Maybe if those two were great examples of leadership or something you could grade the class a C-.

Tyree has been a contributor and a regular started, but he's never lived up to his potential, so I read that as a disappointment, but you're right tk

This class was very bottom heavy. A lot to like on paper, but a lot of bad attitudes and not many hard workers. I'd say D isn't that far from C- lol

Right, but a C- is the grade you give a student who deserved to fail but tried hard.

The Snoregonian is wrong about the 2013 class being the best as far as recruiting services ranking. I didn't include Scout but they are similar. ESPN is terrible.

Not a good class at all. Shame some guys never developed. I would also remove Devon Allen from the list of difference makers. Not on the football field at least. Carrington is 10x the receiver and even he's been a bit underwhelming.
