Quick Reflection on Recruiting and this Coaching Staff
All,
Some of you on here are bummed that we didn't end up with a top 15 class. Some also question the recruiting capabilities of this staff based upon these results. To put it bluntly, you are wrong.
Recruiting is 12-24 month cycle. it doesn't happen with just one visit 3 weeks before signing day. It's relationships, credibility and more than just a couple of phone calls and a visit. What this staff pulled off with literally 3 weeks of visits, bad PR (Reaves and Strength Coach) is nothing short of miraculous. This is factual and not just sunshine pumping. For those on this board who haven't played or coached I thought I would put this into perspective for those who are question or have concerns because we missed on TE's and just missed the low teens in team rankings. This is truly an elite recruiting staff WT put together.
Here's the facts:
a.) We were 41st in recruiting until Taggart came along.
b.) Our final class ranking by the 3 services was 16, 18 & 20.
c.) Here's the class ranking of the other power 5's with major coaching changes:
- Texas, 33
- Baylor, 39
- Minnesota, 57
d.) We beat everyone but Stanford in the North & USC, UCLA in the south
e.) Put some excitement around the Ducks on signing day with a phenomenal social media outreach to all Ducks.
Not only did this staff beat, by comparison, all the majors with changes this recruiting cycle. This staff beat Texas, Flippin Texas who is in a target rich environment with no distance issues and a historic legacy.
That said, we grabbed 6-7 kids who have a legitimate shot at PT next season and making an impact. We shored up our OL, secondary, DL and ILB core and brought foreseeable depth to our skill positions. Based upon circumstances, time and results you should be pumped that we got the right staff to turn it around.
Please feel free to counter this assessment or show me where I might be a little too full of sunshine but this is how I see it. GO DUCKS!

Smiley sir...this is exactly how i feel. After watching Willie T in yesterdays presser he repeatedly spoke
about building relationships. You dont do that in what 50 days not to mention the dead period. He had
to recruit, hire his staff and get to know current players.
Building relationships isnt just with players its with the mom, dad grand parents. You have to be a really
good salesman. Willie has so much energy and he will get it done. But for people to say this wasnt a high
rated group should look at who we got, where they fit. Some are going to play right away.
Now he has a full year to establish those relationships. He knows that a top ten class or better is what
he has to have to compete with the big boys. We have been to two championships and did it with lower
ranked classes. You can bring in a top ten class but you also have to coach them up.
Look at the fuskies, went to the play offs with out the big recruiting classes. They have good coaches who
have gotten the most out of their players. That being said, The Alabamas, ohio states, florida states, clemson
and USC are the models to look at and study, they always have top five classes. Oregon needs to be in that
group. Once he starts pulling in those kind of players then others will follow. exciting times here at Oregon
Willie T really is the man

+++1. My feelings exactly. These coaches are so much more energetic and exciting it's like a complete 180 from the last 3 years of almost falling asleep listening to Helf and Pellum babbling. Leavitt is an energy machine. Can't wait to see our D in 2-3 years. Best overall coaching staff I've seen in quite some time. They all seem to be on the same page as well and excited to work with one another. Super impressed about how they are reaching out to past players and getting them involved.duckfan22 wrote:Smiley sir...this is exactly how i feel. Excellent breakdown on what an outstanding job Willie and staff did in a short period. They produced measurable results that has to have other PAC 12 coaches thinking. Now for the next steps, develope the players, motivate the players to produce and keep the kids in class and out of trouble.srsmiley007 wrote:All,

+1...agree 100%. It blows my mind that Canzano blows him up in an article this morning saying that he didn't stick to his guns with the values he stressed coming on board. He has such a condescending voice in his journalism and it irritates me to no end. Anyhow...I'm really looking forward to what the next class looks like with these guys having a full year to operate. Going to be crucial with so many spots in '18!srsmiley007 wrote:All,

I think Taggart will learn that Canzano is not someone to be trusted. It's why Chip avoided him and Helf did only token appearances.

I have never understood why Oregon doesn't just go on Primetime on 1080, 1) they aren't condescending assholes and 2) they have fun with it. It'd be so much more of a fun experience and then Clownzano could just talk about the Beavers and their 4 win seasons.greenyellow wrote:I think Taggart will learn that Canzano is not someone to be trusted. In the SB Nation article that was posted they mention that Cristobal is anxious to get Oregon caught up to a 3 YEAR recruiting cycle.srsmiley007 wrote:All,

That's what it takes to compete with the big boys. And also a good thing to remember come this time next year should we fail to land the top 10 class many are expecting. Building a top 10 class doesn't happen one or even two years now, and we've still got a lot of catching up to do with the 2018 class.

I guess I'm showing my age.Saw that article.3 year recruiting plan is definitely new. I guess this shows how good they did as well as the strength of our brand. Kind of shows how impressive these boys are.duck541 wrote:In the SB Nation article that was posted they mention that Cristobal is anxious to get Oregon caught up to a 3 YEAR recruiting cycle.srsmiley007 wrote:All,

Thank you. It's much better crowd on Ducksattack than DT, yourself included. The last 6 months on DT were insufferable. Too many ignorant trolls joined and literally attacked everyone with real insider or true football knowledge. Wasn't like this until this season. Much more civil and real on this board.Duckenstein wrote:Thanks for this post srsmiley

By the way, no "I hope" to this class at all! Forget star rankings, which is mostly for fans anyway, we got real players in this class. In last years class I saw literally 7 potential starters and 5 impact players (Herbert, Young, Mitchell, Simms, Wallace, McCormick). I wiffed on Dye. Didn't see him being that impactful.
However, this class has literally 22 potential starters and 12-14 impact players. This will be a legit class... Not to be too bold, but I see some potential AC&AA's in this group. Like 4-6. This is a seriously good class.....
