Mark Helfrich Recruiting Question
Hey all, sorry if this is a stupid question. I have tried searching it on google and nothing has come up. Out of curiosity did Mark Helfrich during his tenure here in Oregon host junior days to see players and get recruiting a boost? Right now since I have not came up with an answer and how downward recruiting was trending, I am going to guess he didn't host junior days and was hopeful Oregon would recruit itself?
Under Taggart I am sure there will be junior days coming up which I am stoked about. I am also hopeful Taggart would be able to host a satellite camp like Harbaugh in Florida.

I'm damn near certain he had Jr days. I've cancelled my DT subscription, but it sounds like the staff really turned off Rugers parents by not staying in contact. Not sure what else the article said, but I think that was a major reason recruiting went down hill.

Re: Mark Helfrich Recruiting Question
Yeah I literally have been searching google looking for any excerpt of Oregon recruiting with junior days and I have not found anything so I thought I should ask the question if anyone here knew. Yeah basically Rutgers dad said over 10 schools kept every day communication with Rutger and the family and Oregon never contacted them. Rutger's dad was pushing him to commit to Michigan, but that all changed after Helfrich got fired and Taggart kept up daily communication along with Joe and Leavitt. If Helfrich didn't get fired, I guarantee you we would not have Rutger.buckmarkduck wrote:I'm damn near certain he had Jr days. We absolutely had junior days, the problem was that we didn't keep contact with a lot of the kids who came to those camps...and we had some really good players come up to Eugene over the Helfrich era.

Re: Mark Helfrich Recruiting Question
I wonder if the not keeping in contact was the normal routine for the Helf regime, or if this past year just a product of the coaches knowing a new head coach was coming? Seems pretty clear that Helf knew he was out once he called Chip Kelly to come back and save jobs. The season wasn't even half over at that point. So the coaches must have known chances were good they'd be gone. No sense calling players you might not get to coach and that the new coaches might not even want.scoducks wrote:Yeah I literally have been searching google looking for any excerpt of Oregon recruiting with junior days and I have not found anything so I thought I should ask the question if anyone here knew. Course, perhaps that's just normal recruiting for the old staff. Also, if so, then let's not blame Helf only. Every damn one of those defensive coaches should have been calling/texting on the regular. How any of them even thought they could get away with it is mind-boggling.

Mayden said the same stuff last year though, not a lot of communication with the coaches ect. So this wasn't just because the coaches knew they would be fired, it's how Helfs guys handled recruiting for a few years.

Lets not forget Vavae. While I wasn't a fan, he said virtually the same thing. It's all supposition from us, however, it sure looks like they got lazy or hadn't adapted to the times.buckmarkduck wrote:Mayden said the same stuff last year though, not a lot of communication with the coaches ect. Re: Mark Helfrich Recruiting Question
Even 10 years ago, wouldn't a coach at a major program be calling committed recruits regularly? I guess with the way things have changed, and coaches be trying to connect non-stop, that even a call every couple of weeks would seem like a lack of communication.srsmiley007 wrote:Lets not forget Vavae. Yeah, it's really changed. The shift from the 90's to today is extreme. I can see why Chip wouldn't want to come back to this anymore. Coaching and talking to your own players takes enough time let alone having these kids expect daily conversation (adulation) thrown at them.ifuwant2 wrote:Even 10 years ago, wouldn't a coach at a major program be calling committed recruits regularly? Isn't that what twitter, facebook, instagram, snapchat, etc and graduate assistants are there for? All in the coaches name of course.srsmiley007 wrote:Yeah, it's really changed. You would think but apparently we couldn't even get them to do this according to these recruits.EncinitasDuck wrote:Isn't that what twitter, facebook, instagram, snapchat, etc and graduate assistants are there for? That's the problem with staff continuity. It's difficult to keep up with new ways. And that's the trouble with staying in a particular position for too long. It's difficult to change old ways.

Re: Mark Helfrich Recruiting Question
True. But they made a very deliberate decision to "settle" on kids who really wanted Oregon above all else. It was a strategy: we won't beg and cajole kids to come. If we have to work too hard to convince a kid, he's not a Man of Oregon. They thought they could be different by not badgering kids and trying to be straight with them and trying to make an Oregon offer special. To them, the best 20 commits were the kids who didn't/don't go for that kind of stuff/fluff. Of course, that all might have been the old staff's "old ways" showing. It certainly wasn't working for them towards the end.fairweatherfowl wrote:That's the problem with staff continuity. It's difficult to keep up with new ways. Re: Mark Helfrich Recruiting Question
I agree. It may have worked with some, like Arik Armstead who probably felt like every other coach was full of BS, but in many more cases it didn't. If a recruit responds to straight talk, cool, use it. Always speak to people at their level. Don't be fake, but if you want someone who only speaks Chinese to understand you, you don't speak Portuguese.ifuwant2 wrote:True.
