Nice little history lesson and a reminder to all the STAR lovers, they are great to have but don't mean a damn thing once on the field in college. GO DUCKS! Should be a fun year with a few bruises.

After last years fiasco, pretty much anything better will be fun.

LOVE love love seeing us ahead of the Huskies. (Rivals also has us ahead of UW and tops in the conference: https://n.rivals.com/team_rankings/). Yes, obviously "time will tell" as to how the recruits will pan out, same as for every school. But recruiting is recruiting -- separate from playing the games -- and you enjoy whatever victories you're appearing to get while you're in recruiting mode. I think it's also unequivocal that the programs who have consistently great success on the field also have consistently highly rated recruiting classes.

Average star rating has us around 3rd or 4th though, which is a better metric at this point since we have the most commits in the Pac-12 so far.

With that being said, it's a great class so far.

That's just not accurate. They mean allot. Team recruiting rankings overall have a very close correlation with performance on the field. This has been shown over and over again.

Certainly individual players have more variability in terms of rankings versus performance. We can all point out the low ranked players who became stars and vice versa. But Alabama ain't winning titles because they know how to spot 2 star guys who are underrated.

And I noticed myself that the Huskies' class to date had a little higher star rating than the Ducks'. But all I need to do in talking to my brother-in-law up here in Husky land -- since he seemed to imply to me recently that he thought the Ducks' future didn't look too bright -- is point to the published rankings as one reason (among others) that it's probably unwise to write the Ducks' epitaph just yet.

There is literally no good argument I've ever seen for saying stars don't matter. Sure individual players defy the stars, but outliers are always removed from data. The more higher ranked guys you get, the better your chance of winning by every metric I've ever seen. And since we Duck fans have always argued that individual player averages matter more than class rank, we are still the 3-4th best class in the conference. Right now, though, the per player ranking average would give us the best class Oregon has ever had, so if we can finish above an .89 per player average and we take 25 + players, we're going to have one heck of a class probably ranked higher than 12. But an 89.25 per player average wouldn't get you near the top 12 if you were only taking 18-20 players.

With Lenzy's commitment, Oregon is now up to the 10th overall class in the nation. Taggart and his staff are doing work (although we have to thank T&F coach Robert Johnson also for Lenzy.)

Article from 2015 but the trend still holds true. Since 1998, every championship team has had at least two top 10 recruiting classes in the four years leading up to them winning the championship. Stars absolutely matter. Yes, you still need to find a few diamonds in the rough/guys who outplay their star ranking but you also need those high caliber players who can make immediate impacts on the depth chart.
