Re: Winston
Sounds like he wants to take some official visits and wait until feb signing day. I think Oregon still has a solid chance.

From Prehm or JHop, don’t remember who, but the synopsis was that he’s still expected to be a Duck, but Oregon isn’t gonna wait around on him if he wants to drag this out and continue flirting with other schools.

I think that applies to anyone that didn’t sign early. Not sure I totally dig this early signing deal. Puts double pressure on the coaching staff. Almost like they have to recruit twice.Duck24 wrote:From Prehm or JHop, don’t remember who, but the synopsis was that he’s still expected to be a Duck, but Oregon isn’t gonna wait around on him if he wants to drag this out and continue flirting with other schools.

For recruiting twice, I’d say it’s the opposite. Typically you had to go hard on guys all the way until they could be EE’s which were a select few. Now at least half of the class is secured so you really only have to go after a few guys to fill the spots if you’ve done your job well. It’s not really any different in my books, apart from the coaches having bowl games around the time when the early signing period exists.Everythingsducky wrote:I think that applies to anyone that didn’t sign early. I think it sucks for the kids more than it does coaches. Kids who blowup late or want that ONE offer may have to sign early at a team they’re not into as much just to secure a spot. I mean Stephan Gilmore’s brother, Steven, wanted to play at South Carolina but their spots all filled and the guys all were signing early. So now he’s stuck either walking on or shopping for a lowly ranked FBS/FCS offer because all his other spots filled up too since he waited to blow up.

Re: Winston
That was my thought too. Coaches go out and recruit these kids, get them to visit, sell them on their school and then coaches at other schools are allowed to come in later and attempt to undermine what they've done. Early commits is an excellent idea. These kids are being pitched by these coaches hard and should be able to end the stressful recruiting process early.CanadianQuackers wrote:For recruiting twice, I’d say it’s the opposite. At the same time, schools are allowing these young kids to basically hold them hostage by waiting until February. The coaches think they have their classes locked up only to have a few (or several) of these kids decommit during the final stages of the process. Of course, that can have a long term impact in multiple areas. Coaches have to look at "fall back" players, grabbing whoever they can to fill out their classes. The product they put on the field may be lacking in some areas because recruits that were thought to be coming in bailed at the last minute. If the product on the field isn't a consistent winner then that reflects in coaches job security, ticket sales, TV revenue, Athletic Dept funding, for ALL sports and more.
I think it's time to make commitments sign on the dotted line as soon as possible. Like it or not, college football is a business, and the way things are right now this business is being heavily affected by the decisions of 17-18 year old kids who are being put under a LOT of pressure. Make the signing period earlier, get the process out of the way and start being more fair to the colleges and universities that are providing scholarships to these players!
That said, I do think that if a kid signs early and there's a coaching change that they should be required to give that school one year to see if it's still going to work for them, but if they want to transfer afterward, they shouldn't have to sit out a year.
My two bits.

Super I disagree with your take because you're basically taking away advantages the players have. Schools don't need anymore advantages to pressure kids to sign early for what is only a one year scholarship. Not every school has adopted the multiple year scholarship and I don't believe we have. Holding the school hostage is hyperbolic when they tend to have more advantages.

I may be in the minority but I think players should be able to sign as soon as they’re offered a scholarship with the only way to get out being a coaching change. It would make schools think harder before throwing out scholarship offers to 8th graders. It’s an idea Bo Pelini talked about during his Nebraska tenure and can’t say I disagree. If a school knows they want a kid and a kid knows he wants to play for that school/coaching staff, why drag out the dog and pony show? It’d make both sides of the equation be more strategic/thoughtful in the recruiting process IMO.

I think if you did that though, you'd end up having coaches bully kids into signing while on their official visits.Duck24 wrote:I may be in the minority but I think players should be able to sign as soon as they’re offered a scholarship with the only way to get out being a coaching change. The system they have now is just fine. Anything else pushes it in the favor of one side too much over the other.

Re: Winston
Just out of curiousity, how would a system where scholarship offers become binding immediately favor one side over the other? Just because you offer a kid doesn’t mean he has to accept it, it would just stop schools from over signing/over offering the same position then a week from LOI day saying there’s no room for a kid who verbally committed and otherwise shut down his recruitment.greenyellow wrote:The system they have now is just fine.
