Somebody please explain to me what a preferred walk on is and how it’s different than a walk on?

Preferred Walk-on is a step below a scholarship offer. Ergo:

https://www.athleticscholarships.net/20 ... alk-on.htm

"Finally, preferred walk-ons are in a better place to earn a scholarship but in football it normally does not happen until a player’s junior year. That’s because giving a walk-on a scholarship after his freshman year still uses one of the 25 initial scholarships for that year. A player has to be on the team for two full years before they can get a scholarship and not have it count like an incoming student.

I was always under the impression it was basically you were on the team just not a scholarship player.

Depends a little on the staff but there’s usually some level of tryouts for the 20 available non-scholly roster spots. Accepting as a PWO means they have one of those 20 spots guaranteed.....

Whether they ever earn a schollie is up to them, fate, random occurrence, North Korean nukes or who knows...

From a recent article on new preferred walk on Tevin Jeannis

"[Preferred walk-on] for me means I'm on the team and nothing is different from a player on scholarship money, except the tuition is not being paid for," said Jeannis, who plans to major in finance and business. "I'll get the tutoring, recovery and medical needs that they offer."

NCAA changed the rules a few years back that allowed walk-ons to get fed as well.
