This is exactly what I was getting at. Points were scored, but the sense of creativity and purpose to the playcalling that generally existed under Chip Kelly and Helfrost were sorely missing. I never had any confidence that the offense was going to perform consistently or that Taggart was fully cognizant of what he was doing. I'm not saying he didn't have the capacity to learn that - he is still new to the offense, after all - but it very clearly wasn't there, and that was the most frustrating part of the entire season.

One thing that made Chip special was he always coached and called plays with a purpose and a sense of urgency. With Taggart and Arroyo during the Vegas Bowl, both of those seemed to be missing. The playcalling seemed random and timid especially in the Vegas Bowl. Arroyo was calling predictable and timid playcalls and it took him til the 4th quarter to realize they were in trouble and then he unleashed the playbook and then they started scoring. I know it’s simple, but to me calling plays with a sense of urgency makes a huge difference. Even Frost did that to me, he just lacked the purpose sometimes.

Taggart was gone before the bowl game. Arroyo called plays on his own with
very little time to prepare. Not an excuse but that wasnt i dont think a good example.
But we will see. Chip was an innovator on offense. His ideas changed college football. But
he also was stubborn, Trying to run the ball at Nick Fairley in the natty. He sometimes got
carried away with the same plays over and over. Taggarts offense didnt use all the weapons
they had available. We cant know what MC has in mind for sure. We can guess tho.

One thing about MC is I'm willing to give him the same leeway I gave to WT.

Yes, I was completely uninspired and mystified by WT's playcalling choices (and overall offensive game philosophy), but I was willing to believe he needed more than one season to get the guys required to make whatever it was he was trying to do viable. Yes, I know our offense racked up tons of yards, but let's face it -- that was mostly against complete cream puffs.

I'm willing to give MC a season of grousing though without demanding the AD's head on a platter. I refuse to believe we'd hop from one stagnant, unimaginative playcaller to another. I'm also excusing what we saw in the Vegas Bowl, because there's no way we'd have had enough time for a significant playcalling overall (especially with the early recruiting deadline).

I'm also aware that if we start playing a significantly different offense than we've seen in recent years, then the transition might not just look awkward, it might actually BE awkward, kind of like when our offense under Chip first transitioned to such a run-heavy identity.

Should be an interesting season, either way. All these fantastic recruits should help bring MC's vision into clarity much more quickly.
Willie Taggart is a dick.
