Naive question

Post by GoDucksIn09 »

I have followed recruiting for quite a few years with Oregon. I still don't know how the rankings of players are done. With that in mind, are there any of our 4 star players who might get a 5 star. Is it going to be based on just stats of their games or how does it work? If any of them do get a 5 star who are the ones to watch. Forgive the naïve question from this fan.

Don't be bashful, if anything you should be proud of not being a recruiting junkie.

The rankings get adjusted as the year goes on, and there are two big adjustments: after the summer camp season, and after the post HS season all-star games. For example, Canton Kaumatele was a 4-star until he dominated at the Under Armour HS all-star week, where he was moved up in the rankings by all the services and received his 5th star.

There can be other adjustments throughout the year or after the season if someone just had an amazing year. It's more so about potential and the looks test than stats. Likewise, players can get dropped if they look sub par or have injuries. Jalen Hall went from looking like Julio Jones to looking like an average kid, and tumbled in the rankings from top-10 to the 100s. Last year Jamal Elliott was injured, so he was dropped a bit to move up guys who impressed.

For us, it looks like the only candidate to get a 5th star is Mykael Wright. He probably will from ESPN, who has him as 19th overall and only has 11 5-stars now. Wright would need to really impress at the All-Star game practices. Mase Funa has had injury issues, but all Mater Dei guys have a great platform to impress and improve their rankings but probably not an extra star.

Re: "how are rankings done"

There is no exact rhyme or reason. You may think "Is it based on college potential?," or "Is it based on NFL potential?," or "Is it based on how good they are right now?" The answer: Sure.

Scouts take all the above into consideration and focus on none of the above. If one guy has a lot of college potential but very little NFL potential, and another guy at the same position has the opposite, they may wind up with similar rankings. A lot of the time you get guys who are freaks for 16-17 yr olds, and they get an incredibly high ranking based on how they look and how much they dominate right now (Canton K).

I pretty much gave up on the players star rankings. There are so many variables in the evaluation process, which is why you can see such disparity between the services. When I saw Mariota's HS reel I was blown away he was ranked so low.

I tend to look more at a players offer list. If a kid has offers from multiple P5 powerhouses, but still a three star, I'll trust that he's a player.
