3* JC LB Mathis commits
Oregon picked up a solid commit in JC LB Dru Mathis. He's rated as the #3 JC ILB so should provide some nice depth in the middle. I'm really liking the LB class that Oregon has signed so far. Still hope Oregon can pull in one of Goforth, Heimuli, or To'oto'o to finish out the class.

Have heard this kid is a real hard worker and was beyond excited when he got the UO offer. Hope he does well.

Definitely has the size and athleticism for the position. I liked him tape, even though it didn't show a lot of ILB play. His college had his rush the edge a ton, but you get hints that he's got a good feel for things. JC guys always seem to struggle in year 1, so hope he's up for the learning curve.

Why's that? The Joe Walkers and Kyle Longs are a big deal.Duckenstein wrote:Can't get excited about JC guys

JCs are a bit hit-or-miss so hopefully he turns out to one of the productive ones.

Why not give the kid a chance? There are plenty of 4-5 star guys who are not always a lock either. I have heard very good things about this kid's work ethic and character. Can that all go south, sure but he deserves a shot.Duckenstein wrote:For every Kyle long there are 50 other jcsStevensTechU wrote:Why's that? An extra big body at LB position is a nice boost.

JuCo guys are really hit or miss. For every Joe Walker there are a dozen Paris Bosticks.Duckenstein wrote:Can't get excited about JC guys

Same can be said about nearly any group of recruits. For example most fans would be ecstatic with an Elite 11 finalist QB but look at the results, from an article last year.
That means only 19.3 percent of Elite 11 alumni – those billed as the best prospects in each class – became what you’d consider a college star. And those aren’t just first-team stats, second-team quarterbacks are included in that number.

Yea, let's not overreact or anything and claim a 1:12 Hit:Miss rate with JuCo's. George Moore hasn't been a bad backup for us even if he hasn't started and Sione Kava has had his name mentioned in practice reports all year long despite sitting the year out. For every Dexter Manley there is a Palauni Ma-Sun. It's only hard to get excited for JC guys because they usually are here for half the time as a HS recruit, thats how I feel about it.GoDucksTroll wrote:JuCo guys are really hit or miss. I've never seen anything that says a high school 3* has better college production than a JC 3*. I'm not sure why folks discount a guy just because he's JUCO, and if you do, you should probably do the same for the high school kids.

Re: 3* JC LB Mathis commits
I, for one, am not discounting JuCos and am excited for a LB like Mathis. It would be interesting to look at the data for the last ~10 years and see if there's a higher bust rate between HS kids or JuCo kids.StevensTechU wrote:I've never seen anything that says a high school 3* has better college production than a JC 3*.
